Plant Engineer
£38,000 to £41,000 + overtime + paid door to door + discretionary company bonus + on-call pay + company van and fuel card
Your van. Your Cookham patch. Fixed first time.
Keep the pumps, generators and site plant around Cookham running, working from a fully stocked van with the job history in your hand before you arrive. Plantexpand maintains the plant and vehicles behind the UK's water, power, gas and telecoms networks, working for national utilities, councils, government and operators of critical sites. Around 95% of our work is done on site, and we empower our engineers to fix first time, with an eight bay workshop, a planning team and our partner suppliers behind them.
What you'll work on
- Pumps and generators
- Excavators and small plant
- Trailers and other site plant for utility and public sector customers
A typical day
- First thing: check your schedule and van stock, then head to your first site, arriving between 7am and 8am.
- Morning: planned servicing, weekly inspections and preventative maintenance, plus a walk round the site to check any other assets.
- Afternoon: breakdowns and urgent repairs, collecting parts from the depot when needed, and finishing your service reports.
- The mix: around 60 to 70% planned maintenance and 30 to 40% breakdowns and repairs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
