Mobile Plant Fitter/Mechanic (GPS Machine Control Systems)
Location: UK-wide / field based
Flannery Plant Hire is a leading provider of plant hire and specialist attachments to the construction industry across the UK and Ireland. As part of our continued growth, we are now looking for a Mobile Plant Fitter/Mechanic with experience in GPS machine control systems to join our award-winning team.
Role Purpose
Flannery are seeking a skilled and motivated Mobile Plant Fitter/Mechanic to provide mechanical, electrical and technical support for construction plant and GPS machine control systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, installation, calibration and repair of plant equipment and machine control technology at customer sites, depots and construction projects.
The role requires a practical and methodical approach, strong diagnostic ability and a commitment to delivering high standards of safety, quality and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance, servicing, inspections and repairs on mobile plant and construction machinery.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults on excavators, dozers, graders and other heavy plant.
- Install, configure, calibrate and maintain GPS and machine control systems, including sensors, antennas, displays, cabling and associated equipment.
- Provide technical support and fault finding for GPS machine control systems at customer sites and on active construction projects.
- Complete machine control system checks, calibrations and commissioning in accordance with manufacturer and company procedures.
- Use diagnostic tools, technical manuals, wiring diagrams and electronic systems to identify and rectify faults.
- Respond promptly to breakdowns, service requests and technical queries, prioritising work according to operational requirements.
- Complete accurate service reports, inspection records, job sheets and parts documentation using company systems.
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
- Provide customers and internal teams with guidance on the correct operation and use of plant and GPS machine control systems.
- Work closely with the transport, hire, engineering and operations teams to support the availability and reliability of the fleet.
- Maintain tools, equipment and company vehicles in a safe and serviceable condition.
- Follow company policies, risk assessments, method statements, health and safety procedures and environmental requirements.
- Participate in training and keep up to date with developments in plant technology and machine control systems.

Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience as a Mobile Plant Fitter, Plant Mechanic, Agricultural Engineer, Heavy Vehicle Technician or similar role.
- Experience maintaining and repairing construction plant, heavy machinery or other mobile equipment.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic systems.
- Experience installing, servicing, calibrating or fault finding GPS machine control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams and manufacturer documentation.
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel and work at customer sites across the UK, with occasional overnight stays where required.
Desirable
- Formal qualification in plant maintenance, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, vehicle maintenance or a related discipline.
- Experience with Trimble, Topcon, Leica or other GPS and 3D machine control systems.
- Experience working with CANbus, telematics, GNSS, total station or 3D modelling technology.
- Manufacturer training or recognised industry qualifications in construction plant maintenance.
- CSCS, CPCS, IPAF or other relevant industry certification.
- Experience working on construction sites or within the plant hire industry.
