Position Overview
The Mobile Maintenance Fitter is responsible for carrying out the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of mobile plant and equipment used by surfacing operations, ensuring maximum equipment availability and reliability. The role involves working across multiple sites, responding to planned maintenance and breakdowns, and ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with company standards. The Mobile Maintenance Fitter plays a key role in minimising downtime and supporting the operational performance of surfacing squads.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance on surfacing equipment, including pavers, rollers, planers and associated machinery
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs to hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical systems
- Respond promptly to breakdowns to minimise operational downtime
- Inspect/service equipment to identify defects and recommend appropriate repairs
- Complete servicing in line with manufacturers' recommendations and company maintenance schedules
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and service documentation
- Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation, company procedures and industry best practice
- Carry out pre-delivery inspections and prepare plant for operational use
- Liaise with Forepersons and Surfacing Supervisors and operational teams to coordinate maintenance activities
- Manage van stock, tools and equipment to ensure readiness for callouts
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve plant reliability and maintenance efficiency
- Ensure all equipment is maintained to meet statutory inspection and compliance requirements
- Support out-of-hours breakdown cover where required

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plant Maintenance, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or Mechanical Engineering
- Proven experience maintaining and repairing mobile plant, construction equipment or heavy vehicles
- Good knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic and mechanical systems
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload effectively
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of health, safety and quality
- Willingness to travel between sites and support breakdown call-outs when required
Desirable
- Experience maintaining surfacing plant, including pavers, rollers and associated equipment
- Manufacturer-specific training or plant maintenance qualifications
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience using electronic diagnostic equipment and maintenance management systems
- Knowledge of LOLER, PUWER and other relevant statutory inspection requirements
