Field Service Technician

Reports to: Field Operations Manager Direct Reports: None Location: Dagenham/Essex, UK


About the Role

The Field Service Technician will perform routine servicing, inspections, and repairs for a variety of distribution tractors, Ro-Ro tractors, other sea port equipment, aircraft ground support equipment (GSE), and manufacturer’s products on customer premises on demand.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conduct visual or operational checks to identify worn, dirty, or maladjusted parts, and use technical manuals and diagnostic techniques to locate and repair defective machine parts, components, or systems.
  • Perform inspections on accident-damaged machines and compile accurate maintenance reports to support repairs.
  • Operate largely without direct supervision while adhering to company and site Health & Safety policies.
  • Serve as a technical authority and ambassador for Terberg DTS Service Department, maintaining high standards of appearance, professionalism, and technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work Execution & Representation

    • Represent the Terberg DTS Service Department with professionalism in both manners and technical ability.
    • Fully integrate into the Service Department, completing tasks and assignments via verbal instruction or electronic work order systems.
  • Service & Repair Standards

    • Assess and determine appropriate repair techniques, maintenance procedures, and safety measures (e.g., protective clothing, equipment).
    • Obtain customer signature and purchase order details upon completion of work per specifications.
    • Maintain accurate records for administrative procedures and vehicle part inventory.
  • Compliance & Accountability

    • Execute maintenance and repairs in accordance with manufacturer instructions and company Safe System of Work guidelines.
    • Uphold Health & Safety policies to ensure statutory compliance and workplace safety.
    • Comply with current legislation for mobile phone use, equipment security, and mobile work practices.

  • CoOperation & Adaptability

Critical Knowledge Required

  • UK road transport laws including speed limits, vehicle weight restrictions, driver hour regulations, etc.
  • Routine maintenance best practices aligning with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Technical expertise on Terberg Tugs and emerging diagnostic systems.
  • Ability to navigate electronic diagnostic equipment for mechanical and automotive faults.

Qualifications & Experience

  • City & Guilds Level 3 – Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems (V180/188 or V189/00) qualification, or an equivalent recognised credential.
  • Substantial hands-on experience in:
    • Auto-electrician fault diagnosis.
    • Electronic diagnostic equipment handling.
    • Maintenance and repair of heavy goods/specialist vehicles.
  • Full, valid UK driving licence.
