Field Engineer – Distribution Tractors, Ro-Ro Tractors & Aircraft Equipment (GSE Only)
Reports to: Field Operations Manager
Direct Reports: None
Location: Doncaster, UK
Purpose of the Role
Performs a variety of routine servicing, inspections, and subsequent repairs to:
- Distribution Tractors
- Ro-Ro Tractors
- Other sea-port equipment
- Aircraft Ground Support Equipment (GSE Only)
- Other manufacturer’s products (on customer premises when requested)
Key tasks include:
- Conducting visual or operational checks to identify worn, dirty, or maladjusted parts
- Carrying out technical inspections using technical manuals, diagnostic techniques, and equipment testing
- Repairing or replacing inoperable or defective parts, components, or systems
- Completing thorough inspections of accident-damaged machines and producing accurate reports for repairs
- Working without direct supervision, adhering strictly to company and site Health & Safety requirements
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Represent Terberg DTS Service Department with high standards in appearance, professionalism, and technical ability
- Work as an effective team member within the Service Department
- Undertake assigned tasks (oral/instruction or electronic work orders, field repairs, maintenance checks)
- Select appropriate repair techniques, tools, and materials, ensuring adherence to safety protocols (e.g., VPK3 Eye Protection, PPE)
- Obtain customer satisfaction and approval prior to completion—signoffs and purchase order numbers where required
- Perform all administrative and inventory procedures (e.g., stock management of parts, accurate vehicle/equipment tracking)
- Ensuring repairs/maintenance comply with manufacturer’s instructions and Terberg’s Safe System of Work
- Uphold Terberg’s Health & Safety Policy—complying with statutory obligations and safeguarding all staff in designated areas
Behavioural & Workplace Expectations
- Attend mandatory training and improvement seminars
- Maintain company vehicles and equipment in a clean, safe, and presentable condition
- Adhere to mobile phone legislation (e.g., location-based rules)
- Actively collaborate with other departments, especially during new projects/initiatives
- Be available for additional hours, including unsocial/emergency call-outs
- Willingness to work away from home (onsite repairs on customer vehicles) during unsociable hours when required
- Perform any other duties relevant to sustain/support business functions

Technical & Situational Requirements
Critical Knowledge Needed
✅ Road traffic regulations (speed limits, van weight restrictions, driver's hours compliance) ✅ Preventative maintenance & repairs standards in alignment with manufacturer instructions ✅ In-depth knowledge of Terberg's Rip pleine Series, ABS Range, winches, rope thread protection systems, etc. ✅ Latest diagnostics systems and equipment (hardware, software, fault identification tools)
Qualifications & Experience Required
Essential
- UK Commercial Driving Licence (categorised for Heavy Goods Vehicles—C1/CE)
- City & Guilds Level 3 – Vehicle Mechanical & Electronic Systems (on completion of a full training programme or equivalent qualification in vehicle repair mechanics)
- Demonstrable auto/electric fault-diagnosis experience, including:
- Heavy goods/industrial vehicle diagnostics (young offence risks, towing systems, GSE electrical hazards)
- Proficiency in electronic diagnostic equipment use
- Previous work with mechanical diagnostic tools and hands-on repair skills
