British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Modelling and Simulation Manager in Southampton
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
The Modelling & Simulation Manager is responsible for leading all day-to-day activities, workload, resource allocation, timelines and project delivery of the BAT Modelling & Simulation team. The role is responsible for driving the creation and integration of digital simulation tools and techniques into BAT New Category product development with the aim to accelerate and enhance product development at all maturity stages across all categories, globally. The Modelling & Simulation Manager is expected to develop and own the simulation capability roadmap including hardware and software to deliver robust, fully validated predictive models to all category teams to enable a massive scale-up in simulation activities across New Categories R&D.
This role is responsible for leading and growing the Modelling & Simulation team through expert guidance, people development and mentoring. The Modelling & Simulation Manager will drive procedure guidelines and interact with external partners to develop and improve capabilities and processes. The role holder is expected to be a subject-matter-expert in multiple simulation and modelling techniques with the ability to translate project briefs into modelling requirements and communicate complex technical results to a non-expert audience.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
This role will be part of the leadership team of the Centre of Excellence for Product Development Methods and plays a critical role in accelerating product development across all categories using predictive modelling and simulations. As a leader of a small team of experts, the Modelling & Simulation Manager has a direct impact on all day-to-day activities and the general direction, scale up and adoption of virtual predictive tool in R&D.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Lead, develop, and grow a high-performing global Modelling & Simulation team.
- Define and deliver the Modelling & Simulation capability, hardware, and software roadmap across New Categories R&D.
- Establish guidelines, standards, and validation processes to ensure high-quality, reliable simulation outputs.
- Collaborate with product development teams to deliver modelling solutions that support agile product innovation.
- Partner with external consultancies and strategic engineering partners to advance simulation capabilities.
- Drive process automation and democratize simulation tools to improve accessibility and efficiency across R&D.
- Develop predictive models, address knowledge gaps, and generate insights to strengthen BAT's scientific and technical understanding.
- Act as the Modelling & Simulation subject matter expert, supporting IP strategy and enabling data-driven decision-making across New Categories R&D

What are we looking for?
- Extensive industry experience applying modelling and simulation techniques to solve complex engineering challenges, ideally within product or device development environments.
- Proven leadership experience in building, coaching, and developing high-performing global teams.
- Deep technical expertise in engineering fundamentals, physics, and a broad range of modelling fields, including Mechanical, CFD, Multi-Physics, Electromagnetics, and Chemistry.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and scale simulation capabilities and methodologies across complex, fast-paced organisations.
- Strong skills in managing partners, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts and influence senior leaders on strategic and commercial decisions.
- Experience collaborating with external experts, consultancies, and technology partners to enhance modelling capabilities and business outcomes.
- Strong programme and project management skills, with the ability to balance technical, commercial, and resource priorities while consistently delivering high-quality results.
- Master's or PhD degree in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience, combined with a passion for innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.
