Referment is working with a regulated payments business providing business accounts and international payment services, including to customers in higher-risk sectors. It is looking for an MLRO to take statutory responsibility for AML, CTF and sanctions compliance within its FCA-authorised entity, with oversight extending to the group companies it supports.

This combines regulatory accountability with hands-on financial crime systems work. You'll own the framework and engage directly with the Board and regulators, while also configuring screening, transaction monitoring and onboarding workflows yourself. The remit requires someone who can move between a complex investigation, a platform configuration and a clear explanation of risk to senior stakeholders.

Working with product and engineering, you'll embed controls into new features and improve existing monitoring and reporting. The emphasis is on keeping controls effective over time, not simply maintaining a system once it has been configured.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The Role

  • Hold the MLRO function, maintain AML/CTF and risk policies, and lead business, customer and product risk assessments, including iGaming typologies.
  • Own Sumsub workflows across KYC/KYB, CDD/EDD, screening, monitoring and case management; configure rules and thresholds, test changes and reduce false positives.
  • Oversee investigations, review and submit SARs, and handle law enforcement and NCA requests.
  • Build compliance MI for the Board, senior management and regulators using platform and transaction data.
  • Act as the primary FCA liaison, conduct banking partner audits and deliver financial crime training.
  • Partner with product and engineering on compliance-by-design, escalating technical changes only where they sit outside the platform.

What We're Looking For

  • At least three years as an MLRO or Deputy MLRO in regulated payments or e-money, and a CAMS, ICA Diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Deep knowledge of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, JMLSG guidance, FCA AML requirements and FATF standards.
  • Hands-on Sumsub experience building and improving workflows, rules, reporting and automation—not only reviewing alerts within preset configurations.
  • A record of improving screening and monitoring controls, with advanced Excel, Power BI and confident board-level writing and communication.

Desirable Experience

  • Prior FCA SMF approval and experience of iGaming financial crime risks would be valuable; prior approval is not essential.

This could suit an established MLRO or an experienced Deputy MLRO who combines regulatory judgement with genuine ownership of financial crime technology.
