Motor Mechanic Apprentice (Level 3)

A Motor Mechanic Apprentice (Level 3) services and repairs light vehicles and works either in dealerships or independent garages. Work ranges from replacing simple parts to solving complex faults. Holder of a Level 2 qualification with 6 months+ garage experience, can have the opportunity to earn a salary and gain a level 3 qualification.

  • Inspect and service vehicles
  • Maintain a healthy and safe workshop
  • Diagnose faults and carry out repairs
  • Provide customer service

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician- Light Vehicle Apprenticeship.

Successful candidates will have full-time employment with training in a garage and day release at our training centres to work towards achieving a Level 3 qualification (over 12 months).

You will be expected to carry out day-to-day tasks by yourself under the supervision of a more senior technicians.

As you progress through the programme and your confidence and experience grow, you will be able to manage more complex and challenging tasks on your own.

One of our Training Officers will visit you in your workplace to mentor you and assess your competence regularly. This is part of our close support network NLG provides to ensure that apprentices are both enjoying and succeeding in their course.

North London Garages have rolling college courses which start approximately every 3 months. To apply, you must be able to travel to college once a week.

On completion of this Apprenticeship Standard, the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if they wish as an Associate Member. They would also gain entry onto the IMI Professional Register.

Functional Skills in maths and English, if needed.

We provide you and your vehicle the best possible service and care. At GG Automotive all work and repairs are completed to the highest standard. We cover everything from minor repairs, performance upgrades to major rebuild and restorations.
