Role Purpose

The Environmental Apprentice will support the Sustainability team on the Midland Rail Hub in ensuring design and construction activities are delivered in accordance with environmental legislation, project requirements, and company sustainability objectives. The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience while undertaking a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support compliance with environmental management systems and project permits.
  • Help maintain environmental, sustainability and BREEAM records, reports, registers and documentation.
  • Collect and organise evidence required for BREEAM submissions.
  • Assist with monitoring environmental and sustainability performance.
  • Undertake environmental inspections and audits as required.
  • Monitor waste management, recycling and resource efficiency initiatives as required.
  • Assist in collecting and analysing environmental and sustainability data.
  • Contribute to carbon, social value and sustainability programmes.
  • Promote environmental and sustainability awareness.
  • Help prepare monthly environmental and sustainability reports and KPI dashboards.
  • Support environmental risk assessments and method statement reviews.
  • Attend site meetings and toolbox talks where appropriate.
  • Assist in the preparation of meeting notes, presentations, technical reports, and other documentation.
  • Support sustainability reviews of design and construction activities.
  • Participate in project meetings and workshops.
  • Contribute ideas to improve sustainability performance and innovation within projects.

Learning & Development

The apprentice will work towards an appropriate qualification, such as:

  • Level 6 Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship

Alongside workplace learning and mentoring from experienced environmental professionals.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Interest in environmental management, sustainability or construction.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above or equivalent).
  • A-Level qualifications or relevant Level 3 qualification.

  • Understanding of environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, waste, pollution prevention or net zero.
  • Full UK driving licence.
