Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Apprentice – Fuel Systems & Maintenance
Work Location: Cupar, Fife
College Location: Dundee and Angus College, Kingsway Campus
Contract: Full-Time Apprenticeship
Start Date: 2nd September 2026
About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and practically minded Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Apprentice to join our team and develop a career in fuel systems, mechanical maintenance and engineering.
This is primarily a mechanical engineering and maintenance role, with electrical engineering forming a supporting element. The majority of your training and practical experience will focus on the operation, inspection, servicing, maintenance and fault-finding of fuel systems and associated mechanical equipment.
Alongside your mechanical development, you will gain an understanding of the electrical components and control systems used within modern fuel systems and equipment. This will help you develop into a well-rounded, multi-skilled engineer with a strong mechanical foundation.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working with machinery, solving practical problems and understanding how mechanical systems operate.
What You’ll Do
Working alongside experienced engineers and technicians, you will develop practical skills across fuel systems, equipment maintenance and associated engineering disciplines.
Mechanical Engineering & Fuel Systems – Primary Focus
Your core development will be centred around mechanical engineering, fuel systems and maintenance, including:
- Carrying out routine inspection, servicing and preventative maintenance of fuel systems and associated equipment.
- Assisting with the installation, maintenance and repair of fuel storage, transfer and dispensing systems.
- Working with pumps, valves, pipework, hoses, filters, meters and other fuel system components.
- Learning to identify mechanical faults and assist with fault-finding and repairs.
- Carrying out checks for leaks, wear, damage and general equipment condition.
- Understanding fuel flow, pressure, filtration, pumping and transfer systems.
- Working with mechanical components such as bearings, seals, couplings, drives and motors.
- Using hand tools, power tools and specialist engineering equipment safely and effectively.
- Reading and interpreting mechanical engineering drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
- Supporting planned and preventative maintenance programmes.
- Assisting with equipment installation, commissioning and servicing.
- Developing an understanding of safe working practices when working with fuel systems and associated equipment.

Electrical Engineering – Supporting Element
As part of your multi-disciplinary development, you will also gain practical exposure to the electrical aspects of fuel systems and associated equipment, including:
- Developing an understanding of basic electrical principles.
- Assisting with electrical fault-finding under appropriate supervision.
- Learning about motors, sensors, switches and other electrical components.
- Understanding the role of electrical controls within fuel transfer and dispensing systems.
- Reading and interpreting basic electrical drawings and wiring diagrams.
- Developing an understanding of how electrical and mechanical systems work together.
- Supporting engineers with electrical maintenance activities within your level of training and competence.
The electrical element is designed to complement your mechanical training rather than replace it. The primary focus of this apprenticeship will be mechanical engineering, fuel systems and maintenance.
Apprenticeship & Development
You will combine formal apprenticeship training with hands-on experience in a working engineering environment.
Under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will progressively develop your knowledge and practical competence across:
- Mechanical engineering and maintenance.
- Fuel system operation and maintenance.
- Fault-finding and diagnostics.
- Pumps, valves, pipework and associated equipment.
- Mechanical installation and servicing.
- Electrical systems and controls associated with fuel equipment.
- Health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Engineering documentation and maintenance procedures.
Our aim is to develop you into a competent multi-skilled engineer with a strong mechanical and fuel-systems specialism, supported by a practical understanding of electrical engineering.

About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a genuine interest in mechanical engineering, machinery and fuel systems.
- Enjoys practical, hands-on work.
- Is curious about how mechanical and electrical systems operate.
- Enjoys diagnosing problems and finding practical solutions.
- Is keen to learn and develop technical skills.
- Has good attention to detail.
- Takes safety and following procedures seriously.
- Is reliable, conscientious and willing to get involved.
- Can work effectively as part of a team.
- Is comfortable working in a practical engineering and maintenance environment.
Previous experience with mechanical work, machinery, vehicles, engines, maintenance or engineering projects would be advantageous, but a positive attitude, practical aptitude and willingness to learn are more important.
Qualifications & Entry Requirements
- An interest in pursuing a career in mechanical engineering and maintenance.
- Willingness to complete the required apprenticeship training.
- Ability to meet the eligibility requirements for the apprenticeship programme.
