Engineer (Multi Skilled/Electrical/Mechanical)

Pay: £47,000 to £54,000 per annum depending on skills and experience

Location: Workington - CA14 4JX

Shift pattern: Days & Nights (Days 06:00 > 18:00 & Nights 18:00 > 06:00)

About the Company

David Wood Baking is a leading food manufacturing company with over 20 years’ experience in the bakery business. We currently produce a range of quality frozen ‘bake off’ and craft bakery products encompassing savoury pastry, sweet pastry, bread, morning goods, and confectionery products from seven cutting-edge bakeries around the UK. Due to continued investment and growth, we are seeking experienced Mechanical, Electrical, and Multi Skilled Shift Engineers to join our engineering team at our Workington facility.

About the Role

We are looking for experienced engineers in all fields.

Mechanical / Electrical / Multi skilled / Welding/ Fabricating & Machining for our bread plant based in Workington. You will be responsible for maintaining the reliability, efficiency, and safety of production equipment across the site. You will provide both reactive and planned maintenance support, ensuring downtime is minimized and production targets are achieved.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Role is hands on – you will be expected to follow and complete planned maintenance of all plant machinery on the site.
  • To have a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues on the plant to increase reliability and efficiency of the equipment.
  • To have the ability to react swiftly when a breakdown occurs, identifying and repairing the fault in a timely manner.
  • To communicate effectively with the wider site teams on issues affecting production.
  • To ensure compliance with all statutory requirements including but not limited to health and safety, making sure that all documentation relating to any plant or machinery is up to date.
  • To always work safely, following the correct policies and procedures, as set out by the company, keeping yourself up to date with best practice.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and implement equipment reliability improvements.
  • Support root cause analysis investigations.
  • Drive reduction of downtime and recurring failures.
  • Participate in engineering improvement projects.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Work safely in accordance with company procedures.
  • Adhere to Permit to Work, Lock Out/Tag Out, and safe isolation procedures.
  • Ensure all work complies with food safety and engineering standards.
  • Support site audits and compliance inspections.

Teamwork

  • Work closely with production teams to maximize plant availability.
  • Provide technical support and coaching where required.
  • Participate in shift handovers and engineering meetings.

Key Skills / Qualifications

  • Time-served Mechanical or Electrical Engineer
  • Recognised engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, Apprenticeship or equivalent).
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Flexible approach to shift working.
  • Basic IT skills, comfortable using Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.

Desirable Skills

Mechanical

  • Bearings, chains, sprockets, gearboxes, and conveyors.
  • Pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.

Electrical

  • PLC fault finding.
  • Motors, drives, and control systems.
  • Electrical installation and testing.
  • Industrial control panels and instrumentation.

Key Experience

  • Experience of using a CMMS system, recording planned and reactive maintenance (on-site training will be provided).
  • Experience of working within FMCG or manufacturing environment would be an advantage.
  • Basic PLC knowledge would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Self-motivated team player with the ability to solve problems effectively.
