Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician
Location: Billingham (may involve some support at Hartlepool site)
Hours: Monday – Friday - days
Salary: Competitive

Role Specification
The Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and supports the safe, reliable operation of plant, machinery, equipment and facilities across Made for Trade sites. Based primarily at our Wynyard site, this is a day hours role with occasionally agreed overtime, callouts and travel to other local sites. Duties include planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, fault-finding and reliability improvement across mechanical and electrical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance in accordance with the site maintenance schedule.
- Respond promptly to breakdowns, minimise downtime, and escalate unresolved faults, safety concerns and significant production risks.
- Carry out authorised mechanical and electrical repairs, servicing and adjustments within individual competence.
- Apply safe-isolation, lock-off/tag-out and permit-to-work procedures, and undertake authorised electrical testing, fault-finding and basic control-system diagnostics.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical systems including bearings, pumps, gearboxes, lead screws, conveyors, motors, pneumatics and hydraulics.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, mechanical drawings, schematics and equipment manuals.
- Record labour, parts, findings and follow-up actions accurately in the CMMS and close work orders promptly.
- Identify recurring faults, contribute to root-cause analysis and implement agreed corrective actions to improve reliability and performance.
- Support approved installation, commissioning and modification work, keeping relevant drawings and maintenance records updated.
- Communicate equipment status clearly at handovers and ensure machinery is tested and returned to service safely.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Follow company procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work, stopping and escalating work that is unsafe or outside individual competence.
- Follow relevant statutory requirements and company health and safety policies.
- Monitor spare parts, tools and consumable stock levels and report requirements to the Maintenance Manager.
- Assist contractors and specialist engineers, ensuring site safety and contractor-control requirements are followed.
- Use breakdown history, maintenance records and performance data to support reliability and continuous-improvement projects.
- Provide technical support and knowledge to other members of the maintenance team.
- Provide reasonable flexibility within the day-hours pattern, including occasionally agreed overtime or callouts, for urgent maintenance needs.
- Follow controlled maintenance procedures, maintain accurate records and support compliance with the company’s ISO 9001 quality management system.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Recognised Level 3 in Electrical Power Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Time-served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent relevant training and practical experience.
- Good understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Strong electrical fault-finding ability, including safe isolation, testing and verification.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair ability.
- Proactive approach to identifying, resolving and escalating issues.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings and equipment documentation.
- Relevant practical maintenance experience in an FMCG manufacturing or production environment.
- Experience using a CMMS to manage work orders and maintenance records.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with maintenance and production teams.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, including clear operational handovers.
- Good IT skills and the ability to maintain accurate electronic records.
- Strong safety awareness and ability to follow authorisation, isolation and permit procedures.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- HNC/HND or equivalent in electrical or mechanical engineering.
- CNC experience.
- PLC fault-finding and basic diagnostic experience.
- Experience with servo motors and variable-speed drives.
- Experience applying 5S and continuous-improvement principles.
- Basic welding and fabrication skills, where trained and authorised.
