Our Grocery Service Centre, based near Liverpool, is a hub for transactional activity across multiple ABF companies within the ABF Grocery division. Supporting some of our well-known brands such as Kingsmill, Pataks, Blue Dragon, Jordans, Ryvita and Silver Spoon, amongst others. We deliver Shared Service activities across a wide range of disciplines including Customer Services, Consumer Care, Finance, Payroll, HR and IS.

Overview Of Role

Location: Stockport

Salary: £56,235 per annum

Shifts: 4 week rotating shift pattern (days & nights), averaging 42 hours per week.

Are you ready to take your engineering career to the next level? Join our team as a Multi-skilled Shift Engineer and play a vital role in ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient production of high-quality bakery goods.

This is more than just maintenance – you’ll be at the heart of innovation, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. From planned maintenance and fault-finding to installing and upgrading cutting-edge equipment, you’ll help us deliver quality products safely and efficiently.

You’ll work across electrical and mechanical disciplines, collaborate with colleagues at all levels, and contribute to projects that shape the future of our operations. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and want to join a team committed to excellence, this is the role for you.

Key Accountabilities

  • Carry out engineering work efficiently and effectively, following Good Manufacturing Practice, Health & Safety Legislation, and company standards.
  • Work across electrical and mechanical trades as qualified and authorised.
  • Diagnose faults and perform breakdown repairs on process equipment, bakery manufacturing plant, packaging machinery, and site services.
  • Fully utilise and help develop the CMMS to achieve world-class asset performance.
  • Perform planned maintenance, modifications, installations, and upgrades to plant machinery and site services.
  • Work with suppliers on machine issues and ensure documentation/drawings are up to date.
  • Take a proactive role in projects, including supporting the installation and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Drive continuous improvement (CI) initiatives to reduce downtime and improve safety and quality.
  • Deliver 24/7 engineering support as required to keep the bakery running smoothly.
  • Manage contractors to ensure compliance with safety, hygiene, and quality standards.

The Right Person

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent trade accreditation.
  • C&G 2382 BS 7671 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • A recognised time-served electrically biased apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Engineering (desirable).
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years as a multi-skilled engineering craftsperson/technician.
  • Practical experience in a Food or FMCG manufacturing engineering function.
  • Strong problem-solving and fault diagnosis skills.
  • Ability to maintain high standards and make sound decisions under pressure.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Health & Safety requirements for engineering.
  • Working knowledge of CMMS.
  • Broad understanding of engineering disciplines.
  • Strong decision-making skills and flexibility to work independently or in a team.
  • PC literate and comfortable with technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of Bakery Production, Maintenance Techniques, Continuous Improvement, PLC control systems, and automated machinery.
