Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer (CNC)

Sector: Manufacturing

Location: Ely, Cambridgeshire

Employment Type: Permanent

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am > 4.30pm

iSQ Recruitment is supporting an established manufacturing business in Cambridgeshire with the search for a CNC Maintenance Engineer to join its engineering team.

This opportunity would suit either an experienced CNC Maintenance Engineer or a skilled CNC Setter/Operator/Programmer with a good understanding of machine maintenance who is looking to move into a dedicated maintenance engineering role.

Working within a modern precision manufacturing environment, you'll be responsible for maintaining a diverse range of CNC machining centres, improving equipment reliability, reducing downtime and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Full support and ongoing training will be provided for the right individual looking to develop their maintenance skills.

Working closely with production and engineering teams, you'll play a key role in ensuring critical manufacturing equipment operates safely, efficiently and reliably while contributing to the site's long-term maintenance strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out mechanical and electrical fault finding across a variety of CNC machining centres.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and restore machinery to production as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance to maximise equipment reliability.
  • Diagnose faults involving hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems and CNC controls.
  • Support TPM and reliability improvement initiatives across the machining department.
  • Identify root causes of recurring equipment failures and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Work closely with production teams to improve machine availability and overall equipment performance.
  • Liaise with machine manufacturers and specialist service providers when required.
  • Assist with maintenance planning, asset management and critical spare recommendations.
  • Promote a proactive engineering culture focused on continuous improvement and best practice.

Skills & Experience

  • Apprenticeship trained or equivalent engineering qualification, or relevant CNC machining experience.
  • Experience as either: a CNC Maintenance Engineer, or a CNC Setter, Operator or Programmer with a good understanding of machine maintenance and fault diagnosis.
  • Strong understanding of CNC machine tools and machining processes.
  • Knowledge of CNC control systems such as Haas, Doosan, Hartford, Mazak, Matsuura or Star.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills, with a willingness to develop further.
  • Understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics and industrial electrical systems.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

Desirable

  • Previous experience carrying out planned preventative maintenance.
  • Experience with PLC diagnostics and fault investigation.
  • Exposure to TPM, Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen or 5S methodologies.
  • Background within precision engineering, aerospace, medical devices or other advanced manufacturing environments.
