Do you thrive on finding solutions where others hit a dead end?
Do you have a strong network of contacts across the tool and plant hire industry?
Can you build relationships, spot opportunities, and turn them into long-term business?
If that sounds like you – and you’d like to play a key role in growing an ambitious national brokerage operation backed by one of the UK’s leading independent hire companies – we’d love to hear from you.
About Us
The Hireman is a growing, independent tool hire company, supplying professional contractors across London, the Home Counties, and beyond. Founded in 1985, we’ve built an excellent reputation for service, reliability, and going out of our way to help our customers.
We believe we’re successful because we make life easy for our clients – and we give our people the tools, trust, and support to make that happen.
Alongside our extensive fleet of owned equipment, we operate a growing cross hire and brokerage division, providing customers with access to specialist equipment nationwide. What makes us different is that we’re not simply a broker – we understand hire. Our experienced hire controllers, technical knowledge, and substantial owned fleet allow us to offer customers a level of service and expertise that pure brokerage businesses cannot match.
The role
We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Business Development Manager to support the growth of our UK-wide Cross Hire & Brokerage operation.
This is a field-based role with national responsibility, focused on developing new customer relationships, increasing revenue, and expanding our brokerage network. While the role can be based remotely, candidates will ideally be located within the Midlands or North of London to provide practical access to customers and suppliers across the country.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
