Job Description
Acting as the main HSW contact for designated teams, providing timely, expert advice and guidance.
Supporting managers through site visits, work shadowing, risk assessment reviews, and safe systems of work. Use insights from these activities to identify high-risk activities, recurring issues, and emerging hazards.
Collaborating with HSW consultation groups and Trade Unions to understand local priorities and address key risks.
Promoting a proactive HSW culture by engaging leaders and helping them deliver their responsibilities.
Support managers in accident and near-miss investigations, ensuring lessons learned are identified, recorded, and embedded, including serious incidents.
Contributing to continuous improvement projects that reduce adverse events and enhance HSW performance.
Assisting with the design and delivery of HSW training, particularly for inductions and line manager development.

The role will be part of embedding our strategic ambitions of strengthening the health, safety and wellbeing culture and behaviours across the organisation.
Your key accountabilities will include:
- Working with the Senior Business Partner to deliver a resilient, responsive HSW service that adapts to changing demands.

The team
The role reports to the Senior Business Partner, in the Business Partner team and is part of the Health Safety and Wellbeing Service. This role is part of a team of 13, Health Safety and Wellbeing Business Partners and Senior Business Partners. You will work closely with others across the Environment Agency to deliver outcomes aligned with our strategy, strengthening the health, safety and wellbeing culture and behaviours of the Environment Agency.
Experience/skills Required
- A good knowledge of Health, Safety & Wellbeing law, standards and guidance. With experience in applying and reviewing them that in the workplace.
- Able to communicate and collaborate with teams, managers and safety reps to convey information and influence them or gather intelligence from them.
- Some experience in conducting investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, draw conclusions and making recommendations for corrective actions and improvements.
- Able to build and sustain effective relationships, recognising good practice and providing challenge where necessary.
- Able to deliver results, taking the initiative, making decisions, and solving problems.
- Focused on customers and partners, understanding their differing and conflicting needs, providing rapid and effective responses.
It is essential for candidates to have:
- NEBOSH General Certificate for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, or equivalent.
- Technical membership of IOSH or equivalent.
- Experience of practically applying HSW standards.
- A Driving Licence for driving in the UK.
Contact and additional information
Health, Safety and Wellbeing is a national team supporting the Environment Agency across England. You will be part of a dispersed team working primarily in either the North, the Midlands, the South East or the South West.
Travel is expected, sometimes at short notice. This will be to offices, depots and site locations. Travel will mainly be in the geographic patch you cover but could extend beyond that. The Business Partner Team have regular face-to-face team meetings and Health Safety and Wellbeing have bi-annual face-to-face whole service meetings, these are most often in Birmingham, Bristol or London.
Interviews are expected to take place in early November 2026 via Microsoft Teams.
