Community the Union is looking to appoint 5 National Organisers upon 2-year fixed-term contracts, based throughout the UK.
As part of the National Organising Unit, the five National Organisers will act as a strategic team of mobile organisers who will be deployed across the UK to support the union’s organising, campaign, and recruitment objectives. The National Organising Unit will have a focus on pursuing opportunities arising from the new Trade Union Access Regulations and our National Organisers will work throughout the UK and across the union’s industrial sectors to deliver organising strategies. As a national role, a driving license is essential with the flexibility to travel with overnight stays.
National Organising Unit (Specialist Attributes)
The National Organising Unit is in place to serve as a UK-wide mobile organising resource to strengthen the opportunities arising from the forthcoming Trade Union Access Regulations and support new recognition agreements and will form part of the implementation of Community’s strategic organising plans and activities across the UK to achieve sustained growth for the union.
Responsibilities will include:
- Assist with the delivery of national organising strategies, projects, and recruitment campaign, with a key focus on building organising capacity in alignment with Community’s values.
- Support the development of the union’s structures through bespoke and focused organising activities with a focus on collective issue-based organising.
- Support the coordination of organising events, campaigns, and recruitment drives to strengthen union engagement and overarching organising UK initiatives.
- Work as part of a team to achieve recognition agreements in identified workplaces and build structures where Community has already achieved recognition.
- Develop organising plans for new and existing areas of growth.
- Generate and author detailed activity reports to the Operations Director with a focus on evaluating membership growth and rep / activist identification and development.
- Where directed and required, represent the Operations Director at regional / departmental strategy meetings pertaining to allocated UK organising work and projects.
- Other duties will be flexibly required to uphold the National Organising Unit and meet the needs of the role.

National Organiser (Specialist Attributes)
The National Organiser will be expected to work flexibly and to fulfil the central function of the National Organising Unit’s remit be required to extensively travel and work beyond their localised regional office.
- The National Organiser will be undertaking a bespoke learning and development training plan that encompasses an Advanced Organising course that entails completion of modules and project work / presentation assessment.
- The National Organiser will be supported with quarterly Progress Reviews overseen by the Operations Director.
- The National Organiser will be expected to travel the UK and must hold a valid UK driving licence. Fulfilment of duties may require overnight stays.

Job Role Competencies & Skills
- A commitment to trade union values and an understanding of Community’s principles.
- Good understanding of collective organising and branch structures with a strong ability to communicate Community’s ethos and promote membership.
- Good organisational work ethics with succinct planning skills to effectively prioritise, diarize, and manage workloads with ability to extensively travel.
- Experience of building activist structures and an understanding of the recognition process, alongside an ability to coach and mentor workplace representatives to develop representative teams using existing legislation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to engage with regional and departmental staff.
- Creative and strategic approach to organising with positive influencing skills.
- Compliance with the union’s GDPR & Confidentiality policies and practices.
- An understanding of legislation that supports trade union representatives.
