The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) is looking for an experienced and suitably qualified finance professional to join us as our National Treasurer.
This is a senior voluntary role and an opportunity for someone with a sound professional career behind them to bring their knowledge, experience and modern financial expertise to a national charity with a unique maritime heritage.
The MVS is going through an important period of development and modernisation. We are looking for someone who can help us ensure that our financial systems, processes and reporting are fit for the future.
The role
As National Treasurer, you will play a key role in overseeing and supporting the financial management of the Maritime Volunteer Service.
Working with the MVS Council and other members of the finance team, you will help oversee and coordinate the financial affairs of the organisation at national and local level.
The role will include involvement in areas such as:
- Overseeing and coordinating banking arrangements.
- Ensuring appropriate financial records, books and ledgers are maintained.
- Supporting the preparation of management accounts, balance sheets and other financial statements.
- Helping to ensure the MVS remains compliant with relevant financial and charity regulations.
- Supporting the implementation and use of modern accountancy systems and practices.
- Ensuring the organisation is appropriately prepared for and compliant with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
- Disseminating financial policies and information to regional and local MVS units.
- Supporting financial governance and reporting to the MVS Council.
- Working with colleagues responsible for the day-to-day administration of the organisation's finances.

Who we are looking for
We would particularly like to hear from someone who has had a successful professional career in finance, accountancy or financial management and who is now looking to use their skills and experience in a rewarding voluntary capacity.
You should have:
- Appropriate professional qualifications and/or significant senior-level financial experience.
- A strong understanding of modern accounting systems and methods.
- Experience of financial governance, reporting and compliance.
- An understanding of Making Tax Digital and modern digital accounting requirements.
- The confidence to advise senior volunteers and trustees on financial matters.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and remotely while being part of a wider national team.
Experience of working with charities, voluntary organisations or multi-site organisations would be particularly useful.

An interest in the maritime world would be a bonus. Although it is not essential, we would especially welcome applications from people with an interest in all things maritime. Perhaps you have worked in the maritime industry, have a connection with boating or the sea, or simply have an enthusiasm for maritime heritage and helping others develop their nautical skills.
A voluntary role with real impact
This is an unpaid voluntary position and no contract of employment exists or is implied. The role is primarily home-based, with the successful candidate expected to have access to appropriate telephone, email and home office facilities. The appointment is initially for a three-year period, with a six-month probationary period and the possibility of a further three-year extension following review.
