Role Description

Department

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is a world-leading research centre, dedicated to the advancement of atmospheric science. We provide the UK with state-of-the-art services for observing and modelling the atmosphere, advanced ground-based observational facilities, computer modelling and support, and data facilities. NCAS is seeking a new Head of Observations, who will oversee the design, coordination, and delivery of cutting-edge measurements and research initiatives that deepen our understanding of our changing atmosphere.

The role will be based in the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories, the Department of Chemistry at the University of York.

Role

NCAS is seeking an exceptional leader to guide our world-class Atmospheric Observations research and services into its next chapter. This is a rare opportunity to shape national and international scientific efforts, drive innovation in observational technologies, and lead a talented team dedicated to generating high-quality data that underpins critical environmental decisions. If you are a strategic thinker with a passion for environmental science and a commitment to excellence, we’d love to hear from you.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
