Neighbourhood Enforcement Officer
£44,184 - £47,262 per annum (career graded)
About the Role
As a Neighbourhood Enforcement Officer, you will undertake enforcement activity by working with residents, businesses, colleagues, and partner agencies to address crime, anti-social behaviour, environmental issues, and community safety concerns. The work is challenging and rewarding, responding to the requests and expectations for a cleaner and safer Borough for our residents, businesses, and visitors. Through communication, advice, investigation, persuasion, and enforcement, you will help achieve compliance with legal requirements, support victims of crime, encourage community involvement, and empower local people to take an active role in improving and sustaining their neighbourhoods. Uniformed, proactive, and tasked crime prevention patrols will be undertaken on foot and motor vehicle. You will be required to conduct investigations and take enforcement action for breaches of relevant criminal legislation. You will undertake problem-solving investigations and also be part of multi-agency operations and Days of Action.
You will work in a designated Neighbourhood and provide the first point of contact with residents, businesses, internal and external partners. The role involves working directly with the Police, partner organisations, and other Council Officers, including those from Youth Services, Planning Enforcement, Highways, Parking Enforcement, Cleansing, and Housing. You will work flexible shifts covering weekdays, weekends, early mornings, and evenings up to 9pm. You will be required to attend and represent Community Safety at various community meetings, ward forums, estate improvement programs, community events, and neighbourhood meetings where necessary.
About You
Excellent communication skills are an essential part of this role together with an enthusiasm and desire to improve the Boroughs environment for its residents and businesses. You must have the ability to patrol alone as well as working as a member of a team. You may face potentially confrontational situations but with your training and personal skills you will be able to resolve these successfully in a confident and understanding manner, while maintaining a high standard of ethics and professional conduct.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
