About the Role
We are seeking passionate economists with a strong academic foundation to join NERA‘s Energy and Natural Resources team in London, Berlin, or Frankfurt. Our global network (operating across 25+ offices in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific) empowers us to deliver rigorous analysis, unbiased expert testimony, and data-driven policy recommendations to top law firms, corporations, regulators, and governments. We specialise in:
- Climate change and energy policies (e.g., emissions, renewable energy, efficiency)
- Policy and regulatory impact assessments (costs, benefits, social effects)
- Auction design & competitor analysis
- Pricing systems for transport infrastructure
- Expert reports for litigation & arbitration

Key Responsibilities
As an Associate Analyst or Analyst at NERA, you will:
Core Duties
- Apply graduate-level skills in microeconomics, econometrics, or finance to real-world energy and resource problems across jurisdictions
- Conduct advanced economic analysis, leveraging methodologies such as:
- Demand/Supply Analysis
- Welfare and Cost-Benefit Economics
- Departmental Analysis & Simulations
- Develop actionable research reports, client briefings, and presentations to influence strategic decision-making
- Collaborate with legal firms, in-house teams, and academics to refine economic arguments and policy proposals
- Develop technical and leadership skills, including:
- Mentoring junior staff
- Designing and delivering internal training
- Leading project workflows
Exposure & Growth
- Work on high-profile, global projects with measurable impact (e.g., decarbonisation strategies, market intervention designs)
- Opportunity to publish findings or present at conferences in collaborations with NERA’s worldwide offices
- Platform to enhance industry networks and specialise by helping us address emerging challenges like energy transition, regulatory arbitrage, or reserve valuation

Requirements
Qualifications (Must-Haves)

Degree(s):
- BA/BSc in economics, finance, or mathematics
- Master’s (MSc/MA) or PhD in a related field (e.g., economics, finance, econometrics, public policy)
- Strong academic credentials with a focus on academic excellence and critical thinking

Technical Prerequisites:
- Proficiency in applied economics concepts, including:
- Microeconomics, industrial organisation (IO), empirical methods
- Econometrics and statistical analysis
- Experience with:
- Quantitative software: Excel, Stata, R, Python, or econometric tools
- Policy simulation techniques
- Analytical rigor: Ability to dissect complex issues, spot strengths/weaknesses in methodologies and undertake continuous learning
- Proficiency in applied economics concepts, including:

Soft Skills:
- Precision and attention to detail in managing nuanced analyses
- Strong written and spoken communication in English (when fluency in a second language like German/French is present, it’s advantageous but not mandatory)
- Teamwork: Comfortable contributing to multidisciplinary teams and leading discussions with agility
