Energy and Natural Resources Associate Analyst / Analyst Roles – London and Berlin/Frankfurt

About the Role

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a passion for climate policy, energy markets, or economic analysis to join NERA’s Energy and Natural Resources teams in London, Berlin, and Frankfurt.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct pioneering economic and quantitative analysis on energy and climate regulation, compensation mechanisms, and market disruption—applied in:

    • Policy impact assessment: Measuring the social, environmental, and economic effect of fuel taxes, emission schemes, renewable investment incentives, and energy efficiency regulations on industries, consumers, and market competition.

    • Market design and evaluation: Public utility pricing systems, regulatory agent simulations, or auction mechanism optimisation for transport infrastructure, energy markets, or natural resource markets.

    • Regulatory compliance: Supporting litigants and governments in international arbitrations and courtroom testimony—crafting expert economic reports, competitions analysis, and deficiency evaluations through data-driven insights.

    • Economic consulting to leading corporate clients: Assisting businesses in risk forecasting, pricing optimisation, internal audits, and policy influence across jurisdictions.

  • Advance client engagements by developing reports, presenting research insights, guiding strategy refinement, and collaborating with senior economists to deliver on high-profile projects.

  • Contribute to firm growth and skill-building:

What You’ll Bring

Qualifications & Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Applied Mathematics, Finance, Social Sciences, or a related field, coupled with either:

    • A Master’s or PhD in Economics, Econometrics, Policy Analysis, or Finance.
    • Applied modelling, econometrics, and econometric software proficiency (e.g.: Stata, R, Python, or Excel-based analysis) is critical with first-class academic grades.
  • Preferred specialisations include:

    • Microeconomics (including Industrial Organisation—IO), behavioural economics, or energy transitions.
  • If you fall outside these areas but possess exceptional data-driven problem-solving skills and a strong analytical mindset, we still encourage you to apply.

Skills & Strengths

  • Comfort with quantitative platforms: Excel (advanced), Stata, R, and/or Python to model statistical datasets, build simulations, or apply machine learning.

  • Sharp analytical mind: Skilled in understanding complex policy frameworks, drawing logical conclusions from grey-area datasets, and interpreting large-scale economic systems.

  • Clear communication: Ability to present findings—insightfully and concise—whether in formal reports, PowerPoint submissions, or face-to-face discussions.

    • English fluency is essential; proficiency in European languages (German, French) is a strong advantage.
  • Team player: Capable of operating autonomously yet collaborating effectively with internal experts, external academics, lawyers, and regulators.

  • Detail-oriented & proactive: You thrive in fast-paced environments, synthesizing rapid data changes into actionable recommendations.
