WHAT YOU’LL DO

Role purpose:
As an Engineering Authority, you’ll be part of our 3rd line Network Operations Team at the heart of our network, operationally maintaining our Mobile, International, Fixed Broadband DNS and Fixed Broadband RADIUS infrastructure. The role involves working with industry standard applications, platforms and virtualised environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, and performance of DNS and RADIUS platforms - supporting national and international customers.
You’ll take a lead role during complex or major incidents, collaborate with technical experts across the UK and international teams, interpret and assess new operational demands, tooling and projects, along with performance monitoring and managing our DNS and RADIUS platforms for our Consumer, Business, Enterprise and Wholesale clients.

What will you be doing?

  • Operationally maintain DNS and RADIUS solutions based on FreeRADIUS, 389 LDAP Directory replication, AnswerX, Unbound, CacheServe, BIND and other vendors.
  • Leading complex and major incidents, driving proactive operational improvements identified through structured post incident reviews and root cause analysis.
  • Applying structured testing methodologies to validate new features, upgrades, and deployments align in production / live environments.
  • Identify and deliver automated opportunities for our operational and life cycle management using scripting, applications or in house tools.
  • Technical lead of new projects and demands impacting DNS or RADIUS, assessing detailed documentation such as Low-Level Designs (LLDs), High-Level Designs (HLDs), and operational guides align with operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless improvements and network growth
  • Support development and knowledge transfers opportunities within the team and peers internationally
  • Participate in a 24x7 On Call rota to provide support outside of business hours.

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:

  • Be the lead technical engineering authority of DNS and RADIUS operations in a 3rd line networks team
  • Lead critical, major and complex technical incidents, driving resolution and service restoration.
  • Lead Post Incident Review root cause analysis
  • Attending operational vendor management reviews, stakeholder updates
  • Leading on best practice and processes for owned platforms
  • Reviewing new bids or projects that impact DNS or RADIUS
  • Drive SLA/KPIs and performance reliability objectives across DNS & AAA estates

WHO YOU ARE

Core competencies, knowledge and experience :

  • 5+ Years of hands on experience in operational and life cycle management within a large Internet Service Provider (ISP) or equivalent network(s). Specifically in Domain Name System (DNS), IP Address Management (IPAM), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), RADIUS (AAA) and LDAP.

  • Strong knowledge of DNS security, DNSSEC, DDoS mitigation, caching architectures and resolver performance tuning.

  • Deep understanding of RADIUS Authentication, Authorization & Accounting (AAA), including RADIUS attributes.

  • Linux system administration and strong scripting in Bash/Python for automation, tooling and diagnostics.

  • Strong expertise in network monitoring platforms and fault diagnostic methodologies, with proven analytical capability to resolve complex issues in service critical environments.

  • Ability to reflect critically and ask difficult questions; thinking holistically about the big picture while working out details and being able to appreciate and articulate the broader implications of a thing

  • High degree of flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks within tight deadlines

Desired:

  • University degree, with preference on technology [e.g. engineering, telecommunications, computer science] or equivalent industry experience

  • Hands-on experience with BIND, Unbound, PowerDNS, Akamai, Infoblox, Radiator, or equivalent.

  • Passionate about new technologies and developments in the telecom industry
