Network Engineer - Cyber Security & Network Transformation
Location: Coventry (Hybrid - 3 days per week onsite)
Contract: 6 Months
Rate: £375 per day (Inside IR35)
Start Date: ASAP
We are seeking an experienced Network Engineer to join a major network transformation programme within a critical infrastructure environment. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering secure, resilient, and high-performing network solutions across both IT and Operational Technology (OT) environments.
Working as part of Cyber Security and Zero Trust Architecture initiatives, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting modern enterprise networking solutions while helping to strengthen security, enhance resilience, and support large-scale infrastructure modernisation projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support enterprise and OT network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, and cloud connectivity solutions.
- Deliver network components for Cyber Security and Zero Trust Architecture programmes.
- Configure and support routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, network segmentation, and security technologies.
- Lead network transformation and infrastructure upgrade projects from design through to implementation and operational handover.
- Monitor network performance, availability, and capacity, proactively resolving issues and minimising service disruption.
- Implement high-availability, disaster recovery, and resilience solutions for business-critical services.
- Collaborate with security, cloud, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure secure network integration.
- Support secure IT/OT convergence through industrial DMZs and controlled connectivity models.
- Maintain network documentation, standards, configurations, diagrams, and CMDB records.
- Provide technical leadership and expert troubleshooting support across network incidents, changes, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale enterprise network environments.
- Strong knowledge of routing and switching technologies including TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, MPLS, VLANs, HSRP/VRRP, and VXLAN.
- Hands-on experience with network security technologies such as Cisco, Palo Alto, or Fortinet firewalls, VPNs, NAC, and IDS/IPS solutions.
- Strong understanding of Zero Trust Architecture, network segmentation, micro-segmentation, and identity-aware networking.
- Experience with AWS and/or Azure networking, including ExpressRoute, Direct Connect, VPCs, and Virtual Networks.
- Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, IPAM, DNSSEC, and enterprise network services.
- Experience with monitoring and management tools such as SolarWinds, PRTG, Cisco DNA Centre, ThousandEyes, SNMP, and NetFlow.
- Understanding of network resilience, failover, disaster recovery, and performance optimisation.
- Experience working with Operational Technology (OT) environments and secure IT/OT connectivity models.
- Excellent stakeholder management, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

Desirable Skills
- Experience within Water Utilities, Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), Energy, or other highly regulated industries.
- Industry certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, PCNSE, Fortinet NSE, AWS Advanced Networking, or Azure Network Engineer Associate.
- Experience delivering Zero Trust Architecture and network micro-segmentation initiatives.
- Knowledge of OT security frameworks, ICS, and SCADA network environments.
- Exposure to cloud security architectures, hybrid networking, and multi-cloud connectivity.
- Experience supporting cyber transformation, infrastructure modernisation, or digital transformation programmes.
- Familiarity with ITIL service management and governance processes.
- Experience with network automation and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Ansible, Python, or Terraform.
