JOB ROLE: NETWORK ENGINEER
Working within the Engineering team of Zen’s Technology department, our Network Engineers are responsible for building and transitioning Zen’s core IP, distribution and access networks along with the operational tools needed to support and operate them.
You will have a background in the ISP or Telecoms industry and will be working on projects where documentation, testing and deployment make up the majority of your daily activities. Working closely with your team colleagues, you will be a positive communicator and a proactive team member. Your contributions will enhance the overall team’s output and will ensure the successful handover of secure, resilient and high performing network services. You will also work closely with our Operations teams to ensure they have the tools, knowledge and support necessary to operate and manage performance on our network.
You will, on occasion, be a point of escalation for our NOC, demonstrating excellent problem solving skills and an ability to learn quickly and to adapt your existing skills and knowledge to support our network. In carrying out these activities you will proactively contribute to and support the development of the Engineering team to ensure we can continue to achieve our goals for the department and for Zen.

- Copper and Fibre Broadband, LLU
- Ethernet, IP-VPN, QoS and VoIP
- Core IP, transit and peering, distribution, access, datacentre and enterprise networks
- Huawei, Juniper, Ericsson, Cisco

Objectives
- Ensure our core and enterprise networks are built to achieve required levels of security, availability and performance – now and in the future.
- Participate in projects to deliver changes to our core and enterprise network in a safe and timely manner.
- Encourage and contribute to the ongoing development of our Engineering team, acting as a role model and providing coaching to more junior members.
- Apply agreed security and technical standards in our engineering practices.
- Support our stakeholders in developing and achieving product and operational strategies, acting as an ambassador for the Engineering team and the Network and Infrastructure department.
- Collaborate with our other teams to ensure that these changes are transitioned consistently and effectively into stable operating environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in projects, working with designers and other engineers to create build plans, test plans, transition plans and network documentation.
- Build, configure and test our networks to demonstrate that they meet the business needs in line with our engineering process.
- Document the built environment and operational maintenance plans to allow safe transition to normal operations.
- Deliver these changes into our live environments in line with our change management process, ensuring they have gone through an effective peer review and testing process prior to implementation.
- Protect the security of our services and data.
- Carrying out planned work outside office hours where needed to minimise customer impact.

Skills & Experience
Technical Skills - Essential
- CCNA / JNCIA or equivalent level of knowledge
- Strong troubleshooting and network diagnostic skills
- Experience of large scale ISP network technologies at all layers: MPLS, IPv4/IPv6, ISIS, BGP, QOS, OSPF, NAT, VLAN, STP, VRRP/HSRP, Optical networking
- Experience of large scale ISP access services: Ethernet access, Broadband (BNG, L2TP, PPP), IP-VPN (L2 & L3), VoIP
- Experience in the planning and implementation of IP peering and transit arrangements
- Experience with one or more of the following hardware vendors: Huawei, Juniper, Ericsson
- Network and infrastructure security, including firewalls, IPS and IDS
- Network lookup and authentication services: DNS, RADIUS, TACACS, Active Directory
- Operational tools: RANCID, Nagios, Cacti
Technical Skills - Desirable
- Knowledge of fibre and WDM systems
- Awareness of mobile data technologies
- GEA, EFM and EAD Services
- Strong security engineering skills
- RADIUS authentication and accounting for DSL services
- Broadband delivery using BTW WBMC
- Exposure to -48V DC Power systems
- Exposure to LLU including Openreach Access Products (FCP, MPF/SMPF) and TAM testing
- Experience of building and working with test and lab environments
- MySQL and/or PostgreSQL
- Tools development: Perl, shell, PHP, Python, SQL or other scripting languages
- Exposure to/awareness of SDN, NfV, and other network automation and orchestration technologies
