Network Engineering Specialist

Location: London or Bristol (Hybrid)
Contract: 6 Months
Security Clearance: BPSS Required
Start Date: ASAP

The Opportunity

We're partnering with a leading telecommunications organisation at the forefront of critical national infrastructure to recruit an experienced ESN Specialist - RAN. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the optimisation and performance of a high-profile Emergency Services Network (ESN), ensuring exceptional service availability and user experience for mission-critical communications.

Working within a specialist RAN Performance & Optimisation team, you'll be responsible for identifying performance issues, conducting deep technical investigations, and driving improvements across 4G/LTE public safety services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed analysis of UE logs, network traces and protocol captures to identify performance issues and service degradation.
  • Conduct end-to-end troubleshooting across LTE networks, including SIP signalling, Push-to-Talk (PTT), SRTP and DTLS services.
  • Analyse drive test logs and network protocol traces to determine root cause of defects and underperforming KPIs.
  • Investigate systematic issues affecting ESN performance and customer experience.
  • Utilise data from multiple sources including:
    • UE application events and Layer 1-3 logs
    • Drive testing and Wireshark traces
    • eNodeB and Core Network signalling
    • OTT protocol traces
    • Coverage, capacity and OSS performance data
    • Network change records
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, delivery and vendor teams to define and implement corrective actions.
  • Support the development of performance optimisation strategies, best practices and network improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise for ESN-related performance issues.

Required Experience

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Extensive experience within mobile telecommunications as a RAN Performance or Optimisation SME.
  • Strong expertise in UE log analysis, Wireshark tracing, and end-to-end network troubleshooting.
  • Deep understanding of 4G LTE networks, radio performance optimisation, and public safety communications.
  • Proven experience analysing drive test logs, protocol traces and network KPIs.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • LTE signalling and procedures
    • SIP protocols
    • Push-to-Talk (PTT) services
    • SRTP and DTLS troubleshooting
    • LTE parameters and timers
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as:
    • Accuver
    • Nemo
    • TEMS
    • Actix
    • Wireshark
  • Experience working with Nokia RAN solutions.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with LTE-based Public Safety or Mission Critical Communications networks.
  • Knowledge of Ericsson, Huawei or Parallel Wireless technologies.
  • Familiarity with 3GPP and ETSI standards.
  • Experience managing third-party vendors and suppliers.
  • Understanding of project delivery methodologies and network transformation programmes.

We're seeking someone who combines deep technical expertise with strong stakeholder management skills. You'll be a proactive problem solver who can work independently, influence decisions, and drive measurable improvements in network performance.

This role would suit an experienced RAN Performance Engineer, RAN Optimisation Specialist, LTE Performance Consultant or Mobile Network SME looking to contribute to one of the UK's most critical telecommunications programmes.
