About The Role
The Network Design Specialist leads the design, evolution, and technical assurance of BT’s Network Cloud fabric, supporting critical Mobile, Voice, Broadband, and cloud-hosted network services. The role provides expertise in IP networking, EVPN/VXLAN data centre fabrics, overlay networking, connectivity, and service integration, ensuring the platform delivers future scalability, resilience, performance, and operational supportability.
Acting as a senior Network Cloud design authority, the role combines network engineering, cloud infrastructure, SDN, and automation expertise to drive fabric evolution, including the transition from Juniper to Cisco architectures. Working closely with tenants, platform engineering, operations, and strategic vendors, the successful candidate will translate complex requirements into robust, supportable designs while establishing standards, reusable patterns, documentation, testing evidence, and operational handover processes.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Produce high and low-level designs for the Network Cloud fabric and tenant connectivity.
- Lead Network Cloud fabric design across routing, switching, EVPN/VXLAN, and overlays.
- Define and assure standard patterns for connectivity, onboarding, and platform growth.
- Translate tenant requirements into scalable, repeatable, and supportable solutions.
- Provide expertise in IP networking, MPLS/WAN integration, VRFs, routing policy, and resilience.
- Collaborate with 21CN and WAN engineering teams to ensure robust end-to-end designs.
- Drive platform transformation, automation, lifecycle management, and Cisco migration initiatives.
- Lead design reviews, technical investigations, and solution option assessments.
- Assess risks, dependencies, interoperability, and operational impacts of network changes.
- Establish design standards, documentation, reusable patterns, and provide technical leadership to engineering, NOC teams, and strategic vendors.

Essential Skills / Experience
- Expertise in large-scale IP networking, including BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, routing, switching, and data-centre fabric design.
- Proven ability to lead network architecture, produce HLDs/LLDs, assess technical trade-offs, and act as a technical design authority.
- High-level understanding of cloud networking and network automation, including integration with cloud/NFVi platforms and software-defined networking concepts.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Extensive experience designing and delivering large-scale IP network and data centre fabric solutions within telecoms, cloud, or critical infrastructure environments.
- Proven experience designing leaf-spine, underlay/overlay, and tenant-segmented network fabrics, including large-scale transformation and vendor migrations.
- Knowledge of cloud, virtualisation, and NFVi platforms, with experience integrating networking into OpenStack, OVN, KVM, and related technologies.
- Ability to translate complex requirements into standardised, secure, scalable, and supportable designs while assessing risks, trade-offs, and operational impacts.
- Strong stakeholder, vendor, and technical leadership skills, with experience producing design documentation, driving engineering best practice, and mentoring teams.
