New Business Manager

Full-time | London / Hybrid | Reporting to New Business Director

About Gray Matters

Gray Matters helps ambitious, founder-led businesses build better new business machines.

Because sustainable growth needs two things:

STORY — a clear positioning, proposition and narrative that gives people a reason to choose you.

SYSTEM — the strategy, process, channels, technology and commercial rhythm that turns that story into consistent growth.

We bring the two together.

Our clients are predominantly creative, marketing, communications and B2B businesses across the UK, EMEA and US. We work somewhere between consultancy and execution: helping clients work out what needs to change, then getting stuck in and helping them make it happen.

We're a small, ambitious team and we're now looking for a New Business Manager to join us.

The role

This is a hands-on new business role.

You'll work closely with our New Business Director, George, to turn Gray Matters' marketing, outbound activity, events and network into conversations with businesses we can genuinely help. That means researching the right companies and people, starting conversations, following up intelligently, qualifying opportunities and keeping momentum moving.

We're not looking for someone to simply hammer out hundreds of generic messages or spend their life updating a CRM.

Good new business is human.

You'll need to understand who you're talking to, why they might care and how to turn an initial interaction into a worthwhile commercial conversation.

What you'll actually be doing

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

  • Identifying businesses and decision-makers that fit our ideal client profiles
  • Researching prospects and finding genuine reasons to start conversations
  • Running targeted outbound activity across LinkedIn, email and other channels
  • Following up inbound leads generated through our content, events, partnerships and network
  • Qualifying opportunities and understanding what's really happening inside a prospect's business
  • Booking high-quality meetings and creating clear briefs for the New Business Director
  • Nurturing prospects who aren't ready to buy today but could become clients later
  • Keeping our CRM and pipeline accurate, useful and up to date
  • Testing messaging, audiences and approaches to improve response and conversion
  • Using tools, data and AI intelligently to make new business better — without losing the human bit
  • Supporting Gray Matters events and occasionally getting out into the market to meet prospects and partners

What we're looking for

You don't need to tick every box, but you'll probably have:

  • Experience in B2B new business, business development, sales or lead generation
  • A track record of creating conversations and qualified commercial opportunities
  • Confidence speaking to founders, CEOs and senior decision-makers
  • Strong written communication — you'll need to be able to write messages people actually want to reply to
  • Good commercial instincts and the curiosity to understand how businesses work
  • The confidence to pick up the phone as well as work digitally
  • Experience using CRM and sales technology — ideally tools such as Pipedrive, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Lemlist or similar
  • The discipline to manage follow-ups properly and keep a pipeline moving
  • Comfort working with targets and being accountable for results

Experience selling into agencies, consultancies, professional services or other founder-led B2B businesses would be particularly useful.

You'll probably enjoy this role if...

  • You're curious about people and businesses.
  • You like the chase, but you're not a stereotypical salesperson.
  • You can be persistent without becoming annoying.
  • You're organised enough to make sure good opportunities don't disappear because somebody forgot to follow up.
  • You're comfortable experimenting with technology and AI, but understand that relationships still win business.
  • And you want to work somewhere small enough that your ideas and results genuinely matter.

Working at Gray Matters

We're a small, largely remote team rather than a big corporate environment.

That means you'll get plenty of autonomy, but you'll also be expected to take ownership. We work flexibly from home, with regular time together in London for team sessions, client meetings, events and the occasional drink.

You'll report directly to our New Business Director and work closely with the founder and wider team.

If you like new business, enjoy talking to interesting companies and want the opportunity to help build a growing business while learning how we build growth engines for our clients, we'd love to hear from you.
