I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Are you a Student Social Worker who is nearing the end of your qualification or recently qualified? Are you interested in a Career with Coventry Children and Education Services? Coventry’s Social Work Academy will give you a great grounding for your career so that you flourish and have the tools to do your job well!
Coventry’s Social Work Academy will develop and promote your core skills and knowledge, and support your journey into a Newly Qualified Social Worker from the start of your professional career to be confident in the work you deliver, with the reassurance that within the high levels of challenge, there is a highly supportive network and framework around you to enable you to do your job well!
Newly Qualified Social Workers will be based within the Academy with time spent with teams, so NQSWs can experience developed practice and gain a good understanding of the systems, processes and services in Coventry. - We will provide you with core social work learning and professional development from experienced Social Workers, Practice Educators and University partners.
- Opportunities to shadow and jointly work with children living in complex situations, including children who are care-experienced and subject to child protection plans, in order to prepare NQSWs for more independent practice as their experience grows.
- Critical reflection time to explore the work NQSWs shadow to translate theory into practice and to consider the impact of interventions for the children and families.
- Support and training in our Family Valued practice framework with families, so that this practice naturally informs assessments and interventions with children and families.
- A career progression scheme to promote and support both learning, and professional development.
- Outreach support from the Social Work Academy for the final part of the ASYE when NQSWs are settling into their team.
