News Editor

Location: London (hybrid working - 3 days onsite)
Employment Type: Temp to Perm

Job Description

The News Editor is responsible for owning the company’s news output, ensuring timely, accurate, and authoritative coverage while representing the company as a trusted industry news source.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Own and manage the yacht news inbox, leading daily newsgathering across PR platforms, social media, competitor sites, shipyards, and studios.
  • Set the daily yacht news agenda, making confident editorial judgements on what to cover, deprioritise, or avoid (including sensitivity to commercial relationships).
  • Write, edit, and publish breaking yacht news across launches, construction updates, deliveries, incidents, rescues, and industry developments.
  • Compile and edit the daily company Briefing newsletter, setting order and emphasis based on news value and audience relevance.
  • Own the News section of the website, ensuring consistency, authority, and accuracy.
  • Represent the company as News Editor at press events, shows, and industry briefings.
  • Write monthly print news pages and curate the top digital news stories of each month.

  • Develop recurring news franchises (e.g., monthly construction milestones, key deliveries roundups).
  • Pitch and write at least one news-led feature per week, tied to current events.
  • Conduct confident interviews with industry experts to secure exclusive commentary.
  • Pitch new newsletter and news formats that refresh the company’s coverage.
  • Collaborate closely with print editorial to flag yachts, companies, and individuals for deeper feature coverage.
  • Act as a regular contributor or subject-matter guide for the company Briefing podcast.
  • Develop stronger editorial judgement around the distinction between:
    • Yacht news vs business news
    • News stories vs news features
  • Operate with increasing autonomy, escalating only strategic or high-risk decisions.

Qualifications

Journalism & News Writing

  • Demonstrated experience in a professional newsroom, editorial team, or digital media environment.
  • Proven track record of writing and publishing daily news content to tight deadlines.
  • Experience covering breaking news with speed and accuracy.
  • Portfolio demonstrating clear, engaging news writing across multiple story types (breaking news, updates, industry developments).

Editorial Decision-Making & News Judgment

  • Experience making independent editorial decisions about story selection and prioritization.
  • Track record of identifying newsworthy stories from multiple sources (press releases, social media, competitor coverage).
  • Experience balancing editorial integrity with commercial or stakeholder sensitivities.

Digital Publishing & Content Management

  • Hands-on experience using content management systems (CMS) to publish and manage web content.
  • Experience maintaining and updating website sections with consistency and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing workflows, including headline writing, SEO basics, and metadata.

Newsletter Production & Curation

  • Experience compiling, editing, and distributing email newsletters (daily, weekly, or regular cadence).
  • Demonstrated ability to curate content with appropriate hierarchy and emphasis for audience engagement.
  • Understanding of newsletter metrics and audience behavior.

Copy Editing & Quality Control

  • Substantial experience editing others' work for accuracy, clarity, style, and consistency.
  • Experience maintaining editorial standards across multiple content formats.
  • Proven attention to detail in fact-checking and proofreading.
