News Reporter - Southern Daily Echo

Application Deadline: 11 September 2026

Department: Editorial

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Southampton

Reporting To: Ryan Evans

Description

The Southern Daily Echo is seeking a news reporter to join our busy team in Southampton, covering the city and surrounding areas, including Eastleigh and the New Forest.

The successful candidate will have a sharp news sense and be as comfortable heading out to breaking incidents as running a live blog from the newsroom. You will play a key role in delivering fast, accurate and engaging content for dailyecho.co.uk, helping us lead the conversation on the stories that matter to our readers.

This is a varied and fast-paced role. One day you could be covering a major emergency incident, the next attending court, chasing exclusive leads, or telling powerful community stories that resonate with our audience. A strong understanding of digital publishing, social media and audience engagement will be a distinct advantage.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
