NHS Lothian and NHS Borders Employees Only
Bands 2–7
Are you approaching retirement but would like to continue using your skills and experience to support NHS services on a flexible basis?
NHS Lothian Staff Bank is inviting applications from employees who are due to retire from NHS Lothian or NHS Borders and wish to continue working through the Staff Bank. This provides an opportunity to remain connected to NHS services while enjoying greater flexibility and work-life balance.
Who Can Apply?
To Be Eligible For This Opportunity, You Must
- Hold a current substantive post within NHS Lothian or NHS Borders.
- Be approaching retirement and intending to leave your substantive post within the next 6–8 weeks.
- Apply for a Staff Bank role that is equivalent to your current substantive post, unless otherwise agreed.
- Have successfully completed your probationary period.

Important Information
- Staff Bank opportunities are available for Bands 2–7.
- Applicants interested in Band 8a and above opportunities should contact loth.staffbankrecruitment@nhs.scot for further advice before applying.
- You may be able to return to work at a lower band where appropriate and subject to service requirements.
- Applications should only be submitted within 6–8 weeks of your planned retirement date.
- If you are not retiring within this timeframe, please apply through the relevant Staff Bank internal recruitment advert.
- Applications received outside of the stated timescales may not be processed.
Application Requirements
As part of the application process, you will be required to provide:
- Your NHS Payroll Number
- A copy of your most recent payslip
- Your National Insurance Number
- A copy of your NHS Lothian-issued PVG Scheme Membership certificate (where applicable)
