The Leprosy Mission Shop UK exists to transform the lives of people affected by leprosy by raising vital funds and awareness for The Leprosy Mission. Through ethical retail and thoughtful product selection, the shop helps support medical treatment, rehabilitation, and community development programs worldwide. The organization is motivated by compassion and a commitment to social justice, seeking to challenge stigma and promote dignity for those affected. Potential board members will join a values-driven team that uses commerce as a tool for positive change, ensuring that every purchase contributes to lasting impact.
Role Description
We are recruiting for two Non Executive Board Members, one of whom will be our new Board Chair when our current Chair steps down at the end of 2026. You will provide strategic oversight, constructive challenge, and guidance to support the effective governance and long-term sustainability of The Leprosy Mission Shop UK. This is a voluntary role with a mix of on-site board meetings in Peterborough and online (four meetings per year) and some work from home for preparation, review of papers, and virtual discussions.

- In keeping with our Christian ethos, all Board members are required to be practising Christians actively engaged in their local church.
- Experience in one or more of these areas would be valuable - market research, direct marketing, digital marketing, e-commerce, product development and selection, legal and, for our new chair, experience of being on a similar non-executive board.
- Financial literacy and the ability to interpret budgets, management accounts, and performance reports.
- Knowledge of fundraising, retail, or ecommerce operations, including an understanding of ethical and mission-led trading.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively at board level.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusion, and the mission of supporting people affected by leprosy or similar causes.
- Ability to balance independent judgment with collective decision-making, and to provide constructive challenge to senior leadership.
- Previous board or committee experience is beneficial, as is familiarity with UK charity regulation and best-practice governance.
- Capacity to dedicate time to regular board meetings, sub-committees, and preparation of papers, including hybrid attendance from Peterborough and home.
