St Mary’s Music School: Non-Executive Director Opportunity
St Mary’s Music School is looking for a non-executive Director with finance experience to join our Board and help guide the School through the coming years. This is an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the work of Scotland’s national music school.
As a member of our Finance Committee, you will play a vital role in safeguarding the school’s financial strength and long-term sustainability, using your expertise to guide strategic decisions and support sound governance.
Person specification
We are looking for an individual with:
- Professional experience in senior-level finance roles, such as accountancy, financial management, audit, investment, or related disciplines.
- Ability to analyse information, contribute effectively to board discussions, and support decision-making.
- The ability to communicate complex financial information to different audiences.
- A strategic mindset demonstrated through the ability to guide organisational development, shape priorities, and support sustainable progress.
- Experience of supporting or managing change, and enabling sustainable improvement.
- A collaborative approach and consistently sound judgement.
- Commitment to contributing time, expertise, and judgement to support the School.
- Previous experience as a Director or Trustee or experience in the education sector is not required.
- A strong interest in education and the arts would be beneficial.

What will you be doing?
As Chair of our Finance Committee, you'll play an important role in shaping the future of St Mary’s Music School. As we continue to increase our impact across Scotland, we are looking for someone who can bring financial expertise, strategic insight, and sound judgement to support the Board in guiding our long-term sustainability and success.

Working closely with fellow Directors, the Headteacher, School Bursar, and senior members of staff, you will help oversee financial planning, risk management, and governance, while contributing to wider strategic discussions regarding the school’s future direction.
The Board meets four or five times per year, with three additional meetings of the Finance Committee. The majority of these meetings are held at the School, located in the Haymarket area of Edinburgh, normally on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon.
