MM Search are delighted to be partnering with Triathlon Scotland to find an experienced and suitably qualified Finance Director (Non-Executive Director) to join its Board.
This is an exciting opportunity for a CCAB-qualified accountant to bring their financial expertise, strategic insight and governance experience to the Board of Triathlon Scotland. The successful candidate will play a key role in overseeing the organisation’s financial performance and long-term financial strategy, while contributing to the effective governance and future development of the sport in Scotland.

Role Type: Non–Executive Director
Responsible to: Chair of Triathlon Scotland
Term: 3 years renewable for a further 3 years
Location: Flexible - Candidates based UK Wide will be considered
Expenses/Remuneration: Board members do not receive any remuneration; Triathlon Scotland operates a full and fair expenses policy.
Role Purpose
To act as a Director of Triathlon Scotland in the best interests of the Company, its members, employees, partners, funding agencies, sponsors and of the communities within which the Company operates. This involves playing a full part in enabling the Board to arrive at balanced and objective decisions and to ensure that the objectives of the Company, as agreed by the Board, are fully, promptly and properly carried out.
Specifically, the Finance Director is responsible for overseeing and advising the Board and Executive on Triathlon Scotland’s financial performance and long-term financial strategy.
Organisational Structure
The Finance Director is an officer of the Board and a Non–Executive Director, appointed by the Board in accordance with the Articles of Association with specific responsibility for Triathlon Scotland’s finances.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Responsibilities: Finance
- Review and advise providing informed advice and support to the Board on the company’s financial performance, solvency and long-term finance strategy and oversee the development of the company’s finance policies.
- Provide advice and counsel to the Company’s senior management responsible for finances; including working with the CEO and Head of Business Operations to prepare budgets and present accurate and timely financial information at each Board meeting and to key stakeholders.
- Provide a wide perspective of the financial and funding landscape that impacts on our sport and the company.
- Report to the Board at each Board meeting on the effectiveness of the Company’s financial performance, taking account of the views of the other individual directors.
- Take the strategic lead on ensuring accounting and auditing systems are robust, secure and fit for purpose. Where appropriate operational advice maybe required.
- Work with the CEO / Head of Business Operations and Triathlon Scotland’s appointed accountants in preparing the annual accounts.
- Chair Triathlon Scotland Audit and Risk Committee.
- Approve all expenses of fellow Board members and those of the CEO.

Board Responsibilities
- Ensure that the decisions of the Board are fully, promptly and properly carried out.
- Challenge and contribute to the development of strategy constructively.
- Scrutimise the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitor the reporting of performance.
- Satisfy themself that the integrity of financial information and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible.
- Ensure they are consulted upon the appointment of the Chief Executive and other senior managers
- Contribute to the to the succession planning related to the role.
- Ensure that they are consulted upon and receives adequate information in a timely fashion about the finances, proposed strategy plans and activities that would have a Material Effect on the Company.
- Ensure that they have access to such key managers and professional advisors of the Company as may be required to enable the Director to perform his/her duties.
- Ensure that they fully understand: the business of the Company and its services; the sport in which the Company operates; the roles of staff in the Company; the Company's organisation, structure and methods of working.
- Ensure that they understand the views of major funding partners and sponsors.
- Attend a comprehensive, formal and tailored induction.
- Seek continually to develop and refresh knowledge and skills to ensure any contribution to the Board remains informed and relevant.
- Ensure that any concerns which cannot be resolved about the running of the Company or a proposed action are recorded in the Board minutes; on resignation provide a written statement to the President, for circulation to the Board, regarding any such concerns.

Obligations
In particular the Finance Director shall:
- Attend Board meetings – currently 4 a year
- Attend the Annual General Meeting including the Annual Awards and such other Extraordinary General Meetings as may be necessary
- Act as a member of such Committees of the Board as the Board shall decide, attending all meetings of such Committees, unless prevented by exceptional circumstances
Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience:
- Experience of financial management and preparing financial reports. You should be a CCAB qualified accountant (essential)
- Experience of working on or with a Board or management committee (desirable)
- Experience or knowledge of sport governing bodies / non-profit organisations (desirable)
- An understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of a company Director (desirable)
