The Role
As a Nurse Assessor/Functional Specialist, you’ll use your clinical expertise and analytical skills to:
- Conduct structured assessments via face-to-face meetings, video calls, or phone calls to evaluate how health conditions affect daily living.
- Produce detailed evidence-based reports (3,000–4,000 words) supporting DWP decisions on benefit entitlements.
- Provide clear clinical recommendations based on empirical findings.
- Meet targets of up to 3 assessments per day at assigned clinics, remotely, or in a hybrid format.
- Continuously expand your knowledge across a wide range of health conditions.
This role replaces hands-on patient care with analytical precision, empathy, and expert reporting—all within a structured 9am–5pm (weekday) working schedule (with occasional 8pm finishes).
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Reporting
- Conduct in-depth, structured assessments of claimants’ conditions (in-person, via video calls, or over the phone)
- Observe, listen with empathy, and gather crucial information
- Analyse clinical documentation and evidence
- Write comprehensive written reports justifying decisional support
- Offer evidence-backed clinical reasoning to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
Quality & Adaptability
- Maintain high accuracy while meeting structured targets
- Continuously update knowledge of health conditions, DWP policies, and care pathways
- Adhere to declaration standards, human rights, cultural competence, and anti-discrimination principles
About You – Criteria
To meet the core requirements, you’ll need:
- NMC register (RGN/RMN/RNLD) with a valid PIN and full practice status (no revalidation warnings or current restrictions)
- At least one year’s post-registration experience in nursing, relevant to clinical assessment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills—expert in
- Empathy-driven listening, questioning, and rapport-building
- Clarity in written reports (3,000–4,000 words per assessment)
- Concise, structured disaster (e.g., date, record completeness)
- Targeted workflow ability—comfortable meeting deadlines without compromising quality
- Good IT skills (proficient in Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new systems quickly
- Unless you live and work near a dedicated clinic, a UK driving licence or secure transport access for assessments

What We Offer
Salary & Financials
- Starting salary of £39,500 (rising to £40,500 after DWP process)
- An 10% of salary bonus based on quality and performance (not part of base pay)
- Hybrid flexibility—assignments of averaging 1–2 days/week at clinic (up to full-time option)
