Obsolescence Engineer
Contract | Outside IR35 | Defence Sector
We are supporting a leading Defence organisation in the search for an experienced Obsolescence Engineer to join a specialist engineering team responsible for managing obsolescence risks across complex military systems and equipment.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in obsolescence management, component engineering, lifecycle management, or engineering change to work on high-profile defence programmes and play a critical role in maintaining operational capability.
The Role
As an Obsolescence Engineer, you will be responsible for identifying, assessing and mitigating obsolescence issues across a portfolio of products, systems and components. Working closely with engineering, supply chain, procurement and customer stakeholders, you will investigate technical change requests, evaluate risks and develop robust mitigation strategies. You will also be responsible for producing technical solution documentation and recommendations, ensuring compliance with customer requirements and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and support obsolescence activities in accordance with the programme Obsolescence Management Plan (OMP).
- Investigate component, equipment and system obsolescence issues raised through change requests and engineering queries.
- Assess the technical, operational and commercial impacts of obsolescence risks.
- Develop and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies, including redesign, alternative sourcing, lifetime buys and technology refresh options.
- Produce high-quality technical reports and solution documentation to support engineering decisions and customer approvals.
- Engage with engineering, procurement, suppliers and customer representatives to obtain the information required to resolve obsolescence challenges.
- Support engineering change activities and configuration management processes.
- Ensure activities are delivered in line with programme schedules, KPIs and contractual requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of obsolescence management processes and best practice.

Required Experience
- Experience in Obsolescence Management, Component Engineering, Lifecycle Management or Engineering Change.
- Strong technical investigation and problem-solving skills.
- Experience performing risk assessments and developing mitigation plans.
- Ability to analyse technical data, drawings, specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Experience producing technical reports, engineering recommendations and customer-facing documentation.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Understanding of configuration management and engineering change processes.

Desirable Experience
- Defence, Aerospace, Naval, Land Systems, Nuclear, Rail or other highly regulated engineering environments.
- Knowledge of IEC 62402 or similar obsolescence management standards.
- Experience supporting military equipment, electronic systems or complex engineered products.
- Familiarity with supply chain risk management and component lifecycle monitoring tools.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a proactive engineer who can independently investigate technical challenges, assess risk and provide practical solutions. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organised and comfortable working with multiple stakeholders across engineering and programme teams.
Security Requirements
Applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain the appropriate UK security clearance. Existing security clearance would be advantageous.
