Job Summary

The Occasional Campus Safety Officer works on an as-needed basis to help maintain a safe and secure campus environment by:

  • Protecting the lives, property, and reputation of Colorado College
  • Supporting the safety of students, employees, guests, and visitors

Responsibilities

  • Patrolling and security enforcement:

    • Patrol campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds to prevent theft, trespassing, vandalism, and other offenses.
    • Investigate suspicious activities, lock/unlock doors as needed, and monitor for hazards.
    • Respond to facility issues in accordance with college policies.
  • Community engagement:

    • Engage with students, employees, and guests to foster positive relationships.
    • Participate in community relations activities with professional, courteous communication.

  • Emergency response:

    • Respond to fire alarms and assist emergency personnel.
    • Act as the initial point of contact in emergency situations, using de-escalation techniques.
    • Coordinate with dispatch and appropriate units based on incident requirements.
  • Security systems and incident management:

    • Monitor multiple security systems.
    • Generate and prioritize service calls, maintaining accurate records.
    • Use records management software and other systems for documentation.
  • Additional duties:

    • Provide transportation services for students and employees.
    • Support special events with security and emergency management.
    • Maintain knowledge of the college’s Emergency Management Plan.
    • Assist with campus event operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate plus 3 years of specialized related experience (or equivalent education).
  • Must be at least 21 years old and maintain a:
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Driving record insurable by Colorado College (if required to drive).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including:
    • Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and basic business math.
    • Exceptional customer service abilities.
    • Confidentiality, strong judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to build relationships with diverse backgrounds.
    • Proficiency in standard office equipment.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Walking, prolonged standing, and stair climbing.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college or associate’s degree related to the field.
  • Experience in:
    • Student affairs
    • Campus safety/security
    • Police work
    • Emergency services
  • NIMS ICS certification.

  • Does not supervise others.
  • Requires driving Colorado College vehicles (drivers must meet CC’s insurance eligibility).

Compensation

  • Salary range: $16.00–$21.00 per hour, depending on experience.
