As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Occupational Hygiene Specialist to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
Role purpose
Lead, develop, and deliver an integrated occupational health and hygiene strategy across the NZT site, ensuring effective identification, assessment, and control of health risks. Provide expert advice, operational support, and strategic oversight while managing occupational hygiene and health personnel and the NZT site health clinic.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the delivery of the Occupational Health & Hygiene (OH&H) strategy across the NZT Project.
- Work closely with the Health, Safety & Wellbeing team to ensure occupational health is fully integrated into site operations.
- Identify, assess and manage occupational health risks across the project.
- Oversee occupational hygiene monitoring programmes, including dust, noise, vibration and hazardous substance exposure assessments.
- Ensure effective health risk assessments (including COSHH) are in place and regularly reviewed.
- Analyse monitoring data and implement improvements to reduce workforce exposure risks.
- Manage and oversee the NZT Occupational Health Clinic and associated services.
- Ensure the delivery of health surveillance programmes, fitness-for-work assessments and the Drug & Alcohol programme.
- Promote a proactive approach to workforce health through health campaigns, awareness initiatives and workforce engagement activities.
- Lead and develop the Occupational Hygiene Technician and Occupational Health Technician, providing coaching, support and performance management.
- Deliver training and guidance on occupational health risks, controls and best practices.
- Monitor, analyse and report on occupational health performance, trends and emerging risks.
- Conduct audits and assurance activities to ensure compliance with legislative and company requirements.
- Support investigations into occupational health incidents and exposure events, identifying root causes and lessons learned.
- Act as the subject matter expert for Occupational Health & Hygiene across the project.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, contractors, regulators and external specialists.

Who we're looking for
Proven experience in Occupational Health, Occupational Hygiene or Health & Safety within construction, infrastructure, industrial or major project environments.
- Strong understanding of occupational health legislation, occupational hygiene principles and health risk management.
- Experience developing and implementing occupational health and hygiene programmes.
- Knowledge of exposure monitoring, health surveillance and occupational risk assessment processes, including COSHH.
- Experience managing occupational health services and/or occupational hygiene monitoring activities.
- Ability to analyse data, identify trends and translate findings into practical actions and improvements.
- Experience leading, coaching and developing teams.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
- A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work collaboratively across operational, safety, HR and leadership teams.
Qualifications & Memberships
- Degree, diploma or professional qualification in Occupational Hygiene, Occupational Health, Health & Safety or a related discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as BOHS, IOSH, IIRSM or equivalent.
- Chartered status, or working towards Chartered status, would be advantageous.
- BOHS Occupational Hygiene qualifications would be highly desirable.
