Job Description: Occupational Therapist
In Southampton, we are transforming Adult Social Care. We share the Social Care Future Vision, to enable us all ‘to live in place we call home, with the people and things we love, in communities where we look out for each other, doing the things that matter to us’.
This is an exciting time to join the Council as we continue to develop our Occupational Therapy Services as part of our transformation programme. We strongly believe in investing towards the future in our directorate.
To help us achieve this, we are looking to recruit an Occupational Therapist within our Occupational Therapy service
About The Role
The post is part of our Occupational Therapy team within our Living and Ageing Well service working to deliver an occupational therapy service within adult social care.
The remit of the Occupational Therapy team includes provision of equipment and minor adaptations to support independence, moving and handling, support wellbeing and prevention and signposting to other community services.
You will work with colleagues and partner agencies to ensure a high quality, responsive and professional social care occupational therapy service leading to positive outcomes for adults with care and support needs.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
- To complete occupational therapy assessments in relation to adults’ personal independence and occupations, in accordance with current legislation and in conjunction with other team members or professional workers.
- To advise and, where possible, teach methods of carrying out daily activities to help individuals overcome a disability and promote independent living.
- To recommend and provide, where appropriate, standard, specialised and moving and handling equipment and give guidance to clients and their carers in its use.
- To recommend and advise on the provision of simple and complex structural adaptations to clients’ homes, liaising with other agencies to facilitate this work.
- To provide advice, information, and guidance on other services available from social services and other agencies.
- To communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, to maintain written and electronic records in accordance with Directorate policies and to be aware of the Directorate’s ‘Access to Records’ policy.
- To promote the Occupational Therapy service to users, colleagues, and other agencies and to identify and contribute to future service developments.
- To work closely with colleagues in health care teams, private and voluntary sectors, and other directorates, to achieve the best possible outcome for clients and their carers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
