I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why join Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO)?

SALMO is the MOD’s centre of excellence for marine salvage and emergency response. Our multidisciplinary team, ranging from Master Mariners and Naval Architects to Environmental Scientists and Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) / Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) Operators, delivers critical support to UK Defence operations around the globe. Whether it's locating downed aircraft on the seabed, surveying wrecks, towing warships, or conducting emergency response drills, our work is as varied as it is vital.

What makes this role different?

  • Work on unique, non-commercial subsea operations that directly support UK Defence.
  • Operate and manage state-of-the-art AUV and ROV systems.
  • A balanced role combining operational deployments (approx. 12 weeks per year) with shore-based technical leadership.
  • Be part of a highly respected, multidisciplinary team renowned for technical excellence.
  • Long-term career stability, exceptional pension, and structured development

What will your job include?

As an AUV/ROV Maintainer, you will be at the heart of SALMO’s specialist subsea capability, helping deliver complex deep-water survey and intervention outputs that directly support SALMO and wider MOD objectives. Using advanced commercial AUV and ROV technology, you will play an active role in keeping critical systems ready, reliable and mission-focused. Working as part of a close-knit, highly capable team, you will tackle technical challenges, resolve faults, support safe and effective operations, and build strong working relationships across maritime delivery. You will champion high safety standards, protect the marine environment and ensure activity remains compliant with relevant maritime regulations. Your expertise will help drive successful operations in demanding settings, keeping SALMO’s marine capability operating safely, efficiently and to the highest professional standards.

The role offers a good work life balance, only deploying at sea for a maximum of 120 days per year with the remaining time taken against leave, training and office-based activity at HMNB Devonport.

We champion flexible ways of working. Whilst onshore, regular in-person on site attendance is required (this is expected to be approximately 60% of your working week) to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration alongside flexibility of hours to support work-life balance and business need. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.
