On-Site Electrician Opportunity in HMP Cardiff
Location: HMP Cardiff, Knox Rd, Cardiff CF24 0UG
Hours: 39 hours per week
Schedule: Monday - Thursday 07:30 – 16:30, Friday 07:30 – 15:30
Shift Allowance: 1 in 3 weekends with 15% uplift
About the Role
At Amey, we are supporting His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing safe, clean, and efficient prisons. We help keep 60 secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly.
The Electrician ensures that the planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out safely, compliantly, and timely.
Preferred: Previous experience with planned preventative maintenance.
Preferred: Level 3 qualification, but Level 2 is acceptable.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring Health & Safety standards are met across the contract
- Testing and inspecting electrical installations in line with current IEE wiring regulations
- Responding promptly to breakdowns, ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently
- Performing planned and preventative electrical maintenance and diagnosing/replacing failed domestic electrical components
- Actively fault finding and problem solving on domestic electrical systems
- Undertaking electrical installation activities according to provided designs and IET Wiring Regulations
- Monitoring and ordering critical spares for all electrical services, and overseeing the BMS System
- Supporting zero carbon initiatives, contributing to sustainability goals, and handling additional tasks as directed by your line manager

Requirements
- City & Guilds 2367 or 2357 Level 2 Electrical Installation works or equivalent
- BS7671 18th Edition (17th Edition considered with upskilling to 18th Edition)
- Good working knowledge of Health & Safety requirements
- Good working knowledge of planned and preventative maintenance operations
- Excellent organizational, time management, and people skills
- Experience of working under pressure to tight deadlines
- Able to work at heights, work independently, and use initiative
- Desirable: Understanding of fire alarm and CCTV systems
- Knowledge and experience of Electrical Systems and Electricity at work Regulations
- Basic IT skills
