Position Title:
Onsite Hardware Engineer (L2/3)

Location:
Southampton (SO31 7AY)

Shift Pattern:
Onsite Monday to Friday (No remote/No hybrid)

Contract Type:
12 Month Fixed-Term Contract

CDW is recruiting for an experienced Onsite Hardware Engineer (L2/3) to support critical infrastructure systems at a major customer site in Southampton. This is a hands-on engineering role focused primarily on hardware diagnostics, maintenance, and repair across a diverse range of enterprise and legacy platforms supporting a highly critical operational environment.

Working within the onsite CDW workshop and across multiple machine rooms, you will play a key role in maintaining the performance, reliability and availability of essential IT infrastructure.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Providing onsite hardware support for enterprise infrastructure and bespoke systems.
  • Diagnosing, repairing and maintaining IBM Mainframes, tape systems, storage arrays and server platforms.
  • Supporting legacy and modern hardware including PCs, printers and custom-built systems.
  • Applying electro-mechanical repair techniques and soldering skills to specialist equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving hardware faults within critical operational environments.
  • Building strong relationships with customer stakeholders and attending technical meetings.
  • Following and improving documented processes and contributing to technical knowledge sharing.
  • Working independently while collaborating with wider engineering and support teams.

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

  • Hardware repair and maintenance experience within enterprise environments
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following:
    • IBM Mainframes (9672, 2003, 2066, 2096)
    • IBM Tape Systems (3490, VTS, 3590)
    • EMC DASD Storage
    • STK DASD Storage
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience working within critical or high-availability environments
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills

Desirable Experience

  • IBM PSeries Servers
  • HP ProLiant Servers
  • Dell and Sun Server platforms
  • PC hardware repair and custom builds
  • Dot Matrix and Laser Printer support
  • Electro-mechanical repair experience
  • Soldering and component-level repair skills
  • AIX, HP-UX or related infrastructure knowledge
