Job Description
About the role:
This isn't just about designing processes; it's about owning the blueprint for our future. As the Operating Model Lead, you sit at the critical intersection of high-level strategy and real-world execution. You will translate ambitious strategic goals into a scalable, high-performance operational framework, ensuring that every transformation project we undertake is efficient, measurable, and deeply rooted in customer needs.
Design the Blueprint for How We Work
You are the architect of our transformation. Your primary mission is to lead the design of Target Operating Models (TOMs) for our most critical strategic programmes. You have the ultimate authority to sign off on the "operational architecture" before any detailed organizational design begins, ensuring our foundations are solid. By defining capabilities, integration points, and governance, you ensure our business evolves with purpose and precision.
Focus on the Customer Experience
We believe that great operational design starts with the customer. You will embed principles of ease, clarity, and responsiveness into every process and technology pillar you design. By mapping value streams and eliminating inefficiencies, you ensure that our internal workflows directly translate into exceptional, customer-centric experiences that differentiate us in the market.
Key Tasks/Areas of Responsibility
- Transformation-Driven TOM Development: Lead the design of Target Operating Models (TOMs) for assigned strategic programmes and projects, defining the required operational architecture, key capabilities, and integration points necessary to deliver project outcomes and drive sustainable organisational transformation.
- Customer-Centric Design Integration: Embed principles of great customer design—such as ease of navigation, clarity, and mobile responsiveness—into the Target Operating Model's process and technology pillars, ensuring all operational frameworks result in positive and effective customer experiences.
- Process and Value Stream Mapping: Analyse current processes and value chains within the scope of the programme/project to identify inefficiencies. Design future-state business processes, standards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to align with programme objectives.
- Technology and Data Alignment: Partner with technology teams to define the required technical landscape, application architecture, and data governance needed to support the TOM within the scope of the programme/project.
- Governance and Transformation Oversight: Define and establish the necessary governance framework, roles, and clear decision-making rights required for the successful operation of the programme's new model and its transition into the business, ensuring effective control over the transformation roadmap. Authority to sign off on the "operational architecture" before the Organisational Design Lead begins detailing "people structures".
- Cross-Functional Blueprint: Create the programme-level operational blueprint and strategic blueprints that clearly outline the future structure of work, providing the necessary input for the Organisational Design function to define detailed people structures and roles.
- Stakeholder Management: Secure project and programme stakeholder buy-in and maintain alignment across delivery workstreams by presenting model diagnostics, design options, and implementation readiness plans.
- Industry Acumen: Maintain a deep understanding of industry trends, best practices, and emerging organisational models (e.g., agile, matrix structures).
- Relationship Management: Foster strong working relationships with all levels of management, acting as a trusted advisor on operational effectiveness for strategic programmes.
- Compliance and Policy Adherence: Ensure all model recommendations comply with legal, regulatory, and company policies.
- Leadership Communication: Prepare and present formal recommendations, impact assessments, and reports on programme and project operating model designs to the Strategy and Transformation leadership.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
