Operational Risk Oversight Manager – Technology, Cyber, and Data

We are seeking a Operational Risk Oversight Manager within Technology, Cyber, and Data to join our Second Line of Defence.

The team provides oversight of critical risk areas, ensuring our digital services are resilient, defences are robust, and members’ data remains secure. Your role will directly contribute to delivering safe, secure, and resilient operations for Nationwide Building Society and its members.


About the Role

As part of our independent Second Line Operational Risk Oversight team, you will play a key role in safeguarding the Society’s systems, information, and processes. The team’s mission is to ensure non-financial risks are effectively managed, enabling Nationwide to serve its members safely and efficiently.

Focused on Technology, Cyber, and Data risk oversight, you will:

  • Collaborate with first-line technology teams, cybersecurity specialists, and data governance leads
  • Assess and constructively challenge how risks are identified and managed
  • Provide valuable insight and assurance for resilient and compliant operations
  • Anticipate risks in a rapidly evolving digital landscape

You will work across the Chief Operating Office (COO) function and wider, ensuring:

  • Controls for IT resilience, cybersecurity, and data management are effective and robust
  • Identification and early governance of technology- and data-related risks
  • Influence of improvements and mitigation plans against major threats

Your insights will shape Nationwide’s risk perspective, informing decisions that balance member safety, regulatory compliance, and technological innovation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as independent internal oversight on Technology, Cyber, and Data risks
  • Work with risk owners and teams to assess and elevate concerns
  • Provide objective independence on risk assessments, controls, and governance
  • Support regulatory and external audit engagement related to risk initiatives
  • Contribute to prospective risk identification initiatives for new projects or frameworks
  • Challenge approach reliability in identifying key risks and trigger points
  • Drive accountability for risk status reporting and consistent risk treatment
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Nationwide’s operations

Requirements

  • Strong background in operational risk, technology, cyber security, IT, or data governance
  • Experience working in Second Line functions (or similar independent oversight roles)
  • Ability to understand complex risks and offer constructive challenge to teams and leadership
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and stakeholder management skills
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (e.g., FCA, PSD2, GDPR)
  • Proven collaboration skills to engage with technical and specialist teams

Flexible Working

Nationwide welcomes flexible working approaches. The role supports hybrid working—where possible—while ensuring both in-office and remote collaboration.

Working Arrangements:

  • Available at least two days per week (or 40% working time if part-time)
  • Office location:
    • Primary choices: London or Swindon
    • Near Glasgow: Requires weekly presence for collaboration
