About the job
As part of the development of our Digital Services function, we are recruiting to strengthen internal digital capability within Cyber Security, Digital Operational Services, and Digital Corporate and Shared Services. These roles are central to building sustainable in-house expertise that supports the management, development and delivery of digital solutions across the transport network.
As an Operational Technology Configuration Manager at National Highways, you will play a key technical role in ensuring the reliability, safety and performance of the technology supporting our Strategic Road Network.
You will work across a diverse range of operational technology systems, managing configuration, change, testing and troubleshooting within a complex, safety-critical environment. Working closely with operational teams, technical specialists, suppliers and stakeholders, you’ll ensure configurations are accurate, controlled and compliant with business and technical standards.
With our technology estate continually evolving, you will also help develop our in-house expertise, improve processes and build knowledge for the future, including supporting the configuration of advanced traffic management systems and site data design.
This is a hybrid role, requiring two days per week in the office, and can be based at any National Highways office location across the UK, with some travel to attend team meetings.
- Manage and maintain configuration information for critical Operational Technology systems, ensuring accuracy, integrity, availability and full lifecycle control.
- Complete configuration requests and Requests For Change (RFCs) through approved tools and governance processes, assessing and coordinating controlled change to minimise operational risk, disruption and downtime.
- Support the planning, testing, validation and deployment of new or upgraded Operational Technology systems, ensuring configurations are technically sound and successfully integrated into live environments.
- Provide specialist operational and technical support during incidents, faults and system issues, using a structured approach to identify risks, investigate problems and coordinate effective resolutions with internal teams and external suppliers.
- Maintain accurate asset, geographical and account records in line with cyber security standards, while driving improvements to technical documentation, configuration processes and knowledge across the team.
- Support and help develop the configuration of advanced traffic management systems and site data design, including the accurate configuration of signs, signals and associated roadside technologies across the Strategic Road Network.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
