About us
At National Gas, the work we do matters.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.
About the role
As an Operations Engineer, you'll play a critical role in the real-time operation of Britain's National Transmission System (NTS). Working within our National Control Centre on a 24/7 shift basis, you'll monitor, control and respond to network conditions to ensure the safe, reliable and secure transportation of gas across Great Britain.
The National Transmission System is critical national infrastructure, supplying the gas that helps power homes, businesses and essential services across Great Britain. Every day, our Operations Engineers make important operational decisions that directly impact network performance, security of supply and public safety.
This is a unique opportunity to work in a highly skilled operational environment where no two shifts are the same. You'll collaborate with colleagues, customers and industry stakeholders to manage network performance, respond to operational challenges and support the safe delivery of maintenance and construction activities across the network.
This is a flow-through role, offering a clear progression pathway through the grading structure. Progression is based on the successful demonstration of the safety, technical and professional competencies required at each grade, together with consistently performing to the standards expected of the next level.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
