Join our Specialist Care team

We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead EMED Group’s day-to-day transport service for the South Thames Retrieval Service at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The service supports specialist teams to retrieve and safely transfer critically ill children 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You will be EMED’s visible onsite management lead, working closely with STRS clinical and operational colleagues while retaining responsibility for our people, vehicles, performance, quality and contractual delivery.

This is a full time role working 40 hours per week across five 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday, with variable starts between 07:00 and 19:00. On call requirements - Monday to Sunday management rota, normally every 2-3 weeks; weekend overtime may also be required.

What you will do

  • Lead the safe, reliable day-to-day delivery of the service and act as the principal EMED management contact for STRS.
  • Maintain 24/7 readiness of the roster, two operational ambulances, the identical backup vehicle and additional resilience arrangements.
  • Ensure technicians and vehicles are ready to join the STRS team within 10 minutes of activation and support the ambition to launch within 20 minutes.
  • Lead and support the Team Leader and Ambulance Technicians, including performance, attendance, wellbeing, development and employee matters.
  • Coordinate absence cover, fatigue management, safe deployment and two-driver arrangements for longer-distance activity where required.
  • Assure technician induction, competence and training, including FREC 4, Level 3 CERAD or recognised equivalent, at least two years’ blue-light emergency-driving experience, annual STRS training and six multidisciplinary education and governance days.
  • Maintain fleet, equipment, cleanliness, connectivity and base readiness, working with Fleet and STRS to resolve defects without disrupting service.
  • Monitor KPIs, reports, incidents, complaints, audits and improvement actions, ensuring accurate information and timely escalation.
  • Attend the required STRS audit, forum and contract meetings and ensure effective communication across STRS and EMED teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
