The role
SSE Renewables is playing a leading role in the transition to a low-carbon future, operating one of the UK’s largest portfolios of renewable energy assets. As we continue to grow our Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery Energy Storage operations across Great Britain and Ireland, we’re looking for an Operations Systems Engineer to help power that growth.
This is a unique opportunity to sit at the heart of our 24/7 operations capability, ensuring our operational systems remain secure, resilient and fit for the future. You’ll be responsible for configuring and commissioning new renewable energy assets into our centralised control systems, helping maximise asset performance, operational efficiency and commercial value.
Working closely with specialists across Operations, Project Delivery, OT, IT and Telecoms, you’ll take ownership of delivering systems that support the safe and efficient operation of our renewable energy portfolio. You’ll also be encouraged to challenge established ways of working, identify improvements and help build the exceptional operational and technology foundations needed for SSE’s continued growth.
You will
- Own the configuration, testing and commissioning of new Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery Energy Storage assets into SSE Renewables’ centralised control systems and operational platforms.
- Develop and deliver system enhancements, collaborating with OT, IT and Telecoms teams to strengthen security, resilience and operational performance.
- Push for better ways of working by creating and implementing processes and system improvements that increase efficiency and support evolving business requirements.
- Design, execute and document testing activities for critical operational technology and IT systems, ensuring high-quality deployments and upgrades.
- Provide first-line support for operational systems, taking accountability for troubleshooting issues and working with specialist teams to maintain service availability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
