Job Purpose / Overview
Carry out activities that support West Burton B CCGT to achieve operational targets safely and within environmental limits to deliver customer satisfaction and maximise operational performance and reliability from the asset and the delivery of the business plan.
The role holder must operate the plant and apparatus safely and effectively to achieve maximum availability, reliability and efficiency. The role includes monitoring the plant, acting in a conservative manner to safeguard health and safety of persons, protection of the environment and the integrity of the plant, routine testing of operational plant and apparatus, and the initial diagnosis and recording of plant defects.
Contextual Information
Operating Environment
The Shift Operations Technician shall be flexible and may be required to undertake other roles within the business, on either a temporary or a permanent basis including working as part of outage teams and project teams.
The Shift Operations Technician needs to be able to support the 24/7 operation of the plant, by working a shift pattern which would include nights, weekends and national holidays.
Framework & Boundaries
The post holder is a member of the West Burton CCGT Operations Team and contributes to the successful delivery of the CCGT business targets and plans. The post holder is required to operate within a lean organisation, to ensure the delivery of a stretching operating program resulting from a challenging commercial environment.
Principal Accountabilities (Outputs of the Job – Activities & Decisions)
- You shall comply, and ensure the compliance of others, regarding the site and company safety rules, procedures and general good practice in areas of Health, Safety and Environment in order to ensure the safety of all persons and equipment
- Apply the principles of Operator Fundamentals including the operation, monitoring and where appropriate actions to safeguard the integrity of the plant. Recording and communicating operational data and information as required.
- Investigate, diagnose and act to solve the causes of recurring problems, working and communicating with the relevant maintenance disciplines to facilitate the most optimal solutions.
- The provision of mechanical and electrical isolation/de-isolation of designated plant and apparatus in the application of the site safety rules.
- A positive contribution to the development and maintenance of effective communication processes with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. Grid, Commercial Operations, local residents, maintenance disciplines etc).
- To make a positive contribution to the development of the station team, and that of yourself.
- Freely sharing knowledge and experience so as to support the development of colleagues and enable the achievement of both personal and business targets.
- Able to support the site Safe System of Work processes by carrying out roles under the site safety rules.
- Able to support the site Emergency response capability by becoming competent to carry out roles under the emergency plan and supporting documents.
- Demonstrate use of Human Performance fundamental error prevention tools.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Plant Management - able to investigate, diagnose and report the causes of plant related problems or issues, informing others and where appropriate suggesting solutions.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated with a track record of successfully seeking and implanting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Proactive approach to problem solving.
- Demonstrates flexibility in working practices/methods and approach to situations.
- Detailed knowledge of operation best practice and application.
- Ability to develop and deliver targets and objectives.
- Good oral, written and IT communication skills.
Desirable
- An understanding of the principles and concepts of plant integrity for a portfolio of production assets.
- A thorough understanding of safety and environment issues and legislation that apply within this area of work.
- Strong team working ethics.
- Trained for roles under Safe systems of Work processes.
- Skills in the area of emergency preparedness.
- Site specific knowledge and understanding of operational procedures, such as; pre-start, start-up, running and shutdown procedures, operating instructions etc.
- Competent use of all job-related IT Systems; such as SAP, Process Book, Station Logs, Office365, etc.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience within a process Industry.
Desirable
- City & Guilds qualification in power station operation.
- HNC or equivalent academic qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Relevant maintenance discipline experience.
- Experience of power station operation.
- Relevant certification/experience in the operation of mobile plant such as; FLT, MEWP, Reach truck and pallet truck,
- IOSH (Managing safety) or NEBOSH; National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
